Cafe 123 Gasing @ Jalan Gasing, PJ – Awesome Hipster Cafe

Today I was craving for desserts. My sweet tooth was working at an all time high. Having an hour or so before dropping my friend at the airport, we decided to try out a cafe relatively close to where we were at the moment – Jalan Gasing. Google suggested two cafes – Decaffinated Cabin (Decaffeinated Cabin – In a World of its’ Own) and 123 Cafe Gasing. We opted for the latter today.

How to get there?

I used Waze, as usual – 123 Cafe Gasing, and it will lead you there. To the regular PJ-ans, I bet you know where Restoran Satellite  and Ipoh Chicken Rice along Jalan Gasing is. Yup, the cafe is located few doors away, within the same row of shops.

The Inside

The Environment

They had this cool, hippie, chillax vibe going on. The kind you play Copacabana while sipping on a glass of lemonade, yup. It spacious, pleasant and well decorated. The table and sitting arrangement were well thought of, and every table came with a plug point yaw!

The crowd was pretty diverse. School going kids to university students and working adults to old timers, all frequented this cafe. Some having casual discussions and work related meetings, most were working on their laptops and doing homework.

Food/Drinks

Firstly, let me brag about the desserts. Pure awesomeness, as you will later discover through my reviews on 2 of their dessert offerings, but for now – this place is a MUST try for their yummy but CHEAP dessert. Coming across good desserts that go between 5 to 8 ringgit these days are a rarity, and that rarity is exactly what this cafe offers.

Chocolate Muffin- 8 Ringgit

You know how you wish for melted chocolate oozing out of the cake/muffin when you cut it into half? That was exactly what I got with this chocolate muffin. It tasted soooo good! It literally melts in your mouth – warm and oozing with chocolate. Its something I will order on repeat every time I visit this cafe.

Homemade Apple Crumble Cake – 5 Ringgit

Do excuse me for snapping a picture of a half eaten slice of cake. Trust me, the size of serving isnt as small as the picture depicts. The cake smelled so delicious and lets just say we had hands that had minds of their own. The hands attacked the cake before my mind could attempt a clear thought to snap a picture.

Do you see the slices of apples in there? They were real and long bits of apple in there. Totally in contrast to many other local apple crumble cakes. Most think that small bits of apple, notice how i said BITS and not CHUNKS? Yup, that’s how tiny they are, and they think those small bits will be sufficient to call a butter cake, apple crumble cake  but not this one. This one went all out on its apple and it was sooooo good. It was warm and soft, totally had the ‘homemade’ part of this cake covered. The apple slices were already softened, infused with the cake itself and the spices, complimented the cake perfectly. Definitely a must try.

Vanilla Chai Spice Latte – 14 Ringgit

Okay, so I have been to this cafe 3 times so far, and I have ordered this latte every single time. Does that tell you how much of a fan I am of it? Yessss! I am super in love with this cuppa tea. Its thick and milky, sweetened to its right amount with a sprinkle of spice that does not overwhelm but compliments this latte perfectly. Soooo delicious, yummmyy. Its a must try!

Deep Fried Chicken Chop – 20 Ringgit

I was trying to decide between BBQ Sandwich and Crispy Chicken Burger. Despite narrowing down my choices, I decided to ask for a recommendation and it was pointed out that their best seller was their Chicken Chop.

I was a little doubtful as to the greatness of the chicken chop because literally every corner in KL serves their own rendition of this dish. How different could this one be? Decided to give it a try anyway and boy was I pleasantly surprised.

The Deep Fried Chicken Chop was finger licking good. Presentation was simplistic with a chunky chicken fillet on the top, followed by baked potatoes and carrots, gravy on the bottom. The fillet was crunchy, crispy and meaty. It was the least fattiest among most fillets i have tasted. Why? There was literally no flour used to coat the fillet, it was served with its skin and meat. I think it was a smart move on their part to serve it with baked potatoes as oppose to mash potatoes.  The latter would have just made the whole dish overwhelmingly heavier/fuller. The baked potatoes simply allowed the dish to be a main without being over the top. It was just divine, a really satisfying chicken chop.

The Rainbow, Chocolate Truffle, Caramel Chocolate, 12 Ringgit each

Caramel Chocolate

The cakes are served in really huge slices, for only 12 ringgit, very generous, especially when they taste yummy. The cakes, all I can say is that they look as good as they look. The Rainbow had a mixture of vanilla + pandan flavor. It was light and fluffy, the kind of fluffy you get from a sponge cake.  For those of you who hates whip cream, this cake is not for you, cause this cake comes with a thick layer of whip cream on top and on the side. Or, if you don’t mind sparing a few seconds removing those whip cream, then by all means – go ahead, the cake taste good. The Chocolate Truffle was made up of thick semi dark chocolate. If you are a fan of chocolate that has a slightly bitter aftertaste, then this is a good cake for you. Its rich and utterly delightful. The Caramel Chocolate are for chocolate and caramel lovers. With a dose of whip cream and  chocolate cake, this delicious combination is only further heighten with the added caramel. I only wished they added more caramel. Perhaps layering the whole top of the cake with it as opposed to only half of it. Other than that, i’ve got no complains.

Will I head back here again?

Hell yes!! For the environment, food, desserts, work space and everything else it offers, I am most definitely heading there again and again.
