I had to go collect my sarees today, the ones I sent for dry cleaning from Dataran Sunway, at The Strand Mall. Since I am already there, I figured why not I head to the Picnic Table. I remember paying this cafe a visit a year ago, and it was a happy place. Why I call it a happy place? Simply because that is what it is. You can have all kinds of worries in your head and on your shoulders, as soon as you enter the cafe – POOOOFFF, it all disappears. The cafe, with its bright colors and artistic decorations and weird arrangements – it really oozes fun and relaxation.

Soft Shell Crab (The Poseidon), 23 ringgit
This was an okay dish. However, with it being the most expensive dish on their menu – I would give this a pass next time and order something else instead. This dish was okay – not great. I think the fundamental error on their part is to use the Gardenia Wholemeal Bread as their base. The soft shell crab + wholemeal bread is not an effective combo. It does not work well together at all. Let me put it in simpler terms. Gardenia Wholemeal Bread taste weird, it is weirdly tasteless, hence why people usually eat it with something sweet or tasteful, like Kaya or Strawberry Jam, but they decided to add it to a soft shell crab, which is another weirdly taste dish. It would have been a different story if they packed the crab with lots of flavors and top it all with a yummy chilly sauce, but nope – that was not the case. As you can observe from the picture above, there is the wholemeal bread, there is the soft shell crab, the mayonnaise and green salad. That is about it. I would totally suggest that they remove the use of wholemeal bread for this dish and perhaps put in one of those burger buns (if they want to safe cost) or some gourmet bread if they want to go all out, and of course – add in some chilly sauce, please. Otherwise, I would not want to spend my 23 ringgit on this dish again.
Grilled Chicken & Cheese Sandwich, 12 ringgit
This was delicious. Yes, the same Gardenia Wholemeal Bread was used, but the grilled chicken was packed with flavors, it was sweetish and spicy. Add in some cheese – you have got yourself a milky yummy sandwich. If you want a good sandwich for minimal pay, this is the place to head to. I do not think there are many cafes, here in Kuala Lumpur especially, that offers a filling sandwich for 12 ringgit. That is pretty cheap by usual standards. Good dish.
Mushroom Bruchetta, 8.50 ringgit
This was an awesome dish. It was simple yet delicious. As you can see – it is a dish that we ourselves can probably do at home, but having someone else do it for you is equally fulfilling if you are a busy person. There was the garlic bread, butter, mushroom and some greens. They serve it fresh out of the oven which means it was hot, moist and yummy. I’ve got no complains, I would certainly order this and several other varieties they offer for their bruschetta range.
Would I head there again?
YEEESSSSSS ! I want to and look forward to giving their dishes a try in the near future.
