Boxes Cafe @ Sunway Velocity Mall – Pretty good food. (Permanently Closed)

Okay, first up – There are several things I need to tell you and these things will make you life a lot easier if you intend to head there in the future. I had to literally go all around Kuala Lumpur just to find Boxes. So, pay attention.

  • Boxes Cafe has MOVED/RELOCATED . Yes, they have. They are no longer located at the EcoWorld Sales Gallery, Bukit Bintang City Centre (BBCC).
  • Do not look for help/assistance from Waze. I did that and I wasted 45 minutes of fuel and time. Waze took me around town on a not so jolly good ride. There would be 2 option that Waze gives you when you type in Boxes Cafe – Jalan Peel and Jalan Pudu. Neither is right.
  • Boxes Cafe is in SUNWAY VELOCITY MALLYes, so key this mall into Waze and make yourself there.  How do I know this? I got really tired of driving around and so I decided to pick up my phone and give them a call myself. They are located in this mall, on the 4th floor, next to Sushi King.

There seem to be a lack of update regarding their current location online,  so I hope the details provided above will make your life easier.

Boxes cafe made it on to several lists in regards to unique cafes to visit in Kuala Lumpur. It made it onto those lists because it was located inside 2 containers, the cargo containers, more accurately. From the picture I saw online – despite being in containers, it still managed to ooze the warm and coziness of a cafe  and this is my guess as to why/how it made it onto the lists of unique cafes.

Sadly though, they had to move.

Now, the only part of their current location that actually resembles their olden days is a wall, a wall on the inside and the wall on the outside..

The rest is pretty much the usual decor you see in many cafes…

Nevertheless, it still exuded warmth and coziness. So, while I was kind of let down that I was not able to experience the whole container cafe thing, I guess a glimpse of it was as good as it gets.

Chicken Salted Egg Rice Set (+ drink), 12.90 ringgit

I am not a fan of salted egg. However, apparently the bestselling rice set here was the salted egg chicken rice set, so I decided to bite my tongue and give this a go, hoping that the salty egg does not overpower the whole dish. If it does though, no problem, I will just pass the dish over to my man, lol.

When the dish did arrive and once I have tasted the salted egg part – which apparently is the whole creamy buttery gravy on the chicken, my wariness disappeared. Instead of tasting like salted egg, instead it taster more like butter chicken. Actually, not really. It tasted more like the fried egg crumbs that you get when you order butter prawns at any Chinese restaurants. Yup, that is exactly what it taste like. Therefore, I had no problem at all eating this dish because the fried egg crumbs is the main reason why I order myself butter prawns. I simply like em which naturally means – I enjoyed this dish. The dish consisted of one fried egg + rice + pieces of fried chicken in salted egg gravy. The whole dish tasted good. I can see why it is a popular dish.

Ayam Perchik Burger Set (+drink), 17.90 ringgit

This was a pretty simple burger. It tasted like a burger, a decent. Nothing extraordinary. If you like the Ayam Perchik from Ayamas, then you would love the chicken patty in this burger because it taste 90% alike. It was a usual cafe burger with fries and some greens on the side. I would not order this again because it is simply ordinary.

Would I head here again?

Perhaps not, unless if I happen to be in Sunway Velocity Mall, then maybe.
