Purple Miao @ Ampang – Something different

Took at trip to Ampang today to visit Purple Miao, a cafe that specializes in Taiwanese inspired street food – which basically consisted of a variety of sandwiches. This is similar to A.Toast ( A.Toast – A thoroughly satisfying find. ) but notably different. Similarities are that they both open in the wee hours in the morning – 6.30 am and they both serve the Taiwanese street style of sandwiches, that is it – that is as far as it goes in terms of being similar.

As you can see from the images above, this cafe looks like a shack/shed. You order your food at the counter and then make your way to your seating of choice. The menu is basically written in Chinese and consisted of 6-7 items. Literally any words visible at the counter is written in Chinese. For a minute there, there was no one at the counter and I panicked – cause I could not read a single thing and from what I can deduce from my surrounding – I would not be surprised if the individuals working there are not fluent in English.  Then a guy appeared at the counter and thank god he speaks English, yay! He explained what each of the items on the menu were and seeing that  it was just a few items, it did not take long. The table seating are as you can see from the image above. Just a couple of tables and chairs – pretty much reminded me of the kind you see in school. It was a nice experience, actually. The city rarely offers cafes of this sort. A shack-like eatery that literally is located by the roadside. There is no the ‘inner part’ and the ‘outer part’ to this cafe. You sit at the same place you place your order – outside. So, you get fresh air, sunshine, greens, all the pleasant visuals needed to enjoy a good breakfast. The only downside here is the mosquito – they tend to attack you as soon as you sit down. An irritant that lingered around us from the start till the end. Grrrrr !

Chicken Floss + Egg Sandwich, 10.50 ringgit

If you are not too picky about your sandwiches, then this would suit you just fine. It basically consisted of white bread, egg, chicken floss, chili sauce and greens. Would I say that it was yummy? Nah, it was not, but it was decent. It was OK lah. I like chicken floss and there was plenty in this sandwich – so I was a happy woman.  The spiciness and the sweetness from the floss + the egg made a pretty good combo. I removed the lettuce while I was eating the sandwich because it sort of tainted the tastiness of the other ingredients, but that is just me – a lil weird.

Cheese Egg Roll, 9.50 ringgit

Now this one, I like very much. It literally felt like I was eating a wrap made of egg omelette and on the inside, there was some cheese, chicken floss and spinach. You could not really get the egg taste that sometimes overwhelms a dish, no, but the egg is thick enough that you know it is an egg. The thickness of the omelette resembled that of a pita wrap. When you bite into it, you basically get the somewhat soft bouncy feel you get when you bite into a burger bun, yea that one and + the sweet and spiciness of the chicken floss + cheese = Yumm. I initially thought that this dish would not turn out as good as it did because come on, egg + cheese is just going to turn everything milky and gooey and yuck, but this turned out very well. I liked it.

Would I head here again?

Nah, I don’t think so. First up, it is all the way in Ampang. It is pretty far. I know that distance is just a number if the food is good  like I said, it wasn’t. It tasted decent and the Menu was pretty limited. If I live down the road, then perhaps I would pay them a visit but since I am not, I would sum it down to once every 6 months kindda thing. After all, I prefer A.Toast ( A.Toast – A thoroughly satisfying find. ). They have better selections, the food taste better and the cafe environment they provide is much more pleasant besides the fact that they are also nearer to where I am at. If I head to Purple Miao again, it would be more for the unique experience (sitting by the road side, eating in a shack/shed – like cafe) and then the food.
