I have not been around Jalan Yap Ah Shak for years. Believe it or not, it actually is across the road from Quill City Mall, UniKL. I knew this but somehow at that point in time, my brain’s mapping system was a lil rusty, lol. When I was driving pass the mall, it is then that it occurred to me that the mall is actually really close by. Hmmm, okay, maybe not directly across the road but perhaps about one or two rows behind what is directly across the mall. If you do not mind crossing the super busy road in front of the mall/university, it would actually take you just about 10 minutes or less, if you fancy walking.Β
Gavel is located on Jalan Yap Ah Shak. This road has a nostalgic feel to it. It is one of the few locations in KL that has managed to retain its ol’ school charm. Just walking along it felt awesome.Β
The inside is warm and cozy. They have ol’ school hits like La Vie En Rose playing on the radio – it sets a relaxed, chill vibe. They offer a range of craft beers – as you can see in the image below. Customer service was great, they were friendly and attentive.Β
**Β Β Just take note that if you guys arrived at Gavel around the same time I did – around 10.30 am, only the All Day Breakfast & Sides and Extras are available. The All Day Everyday & Sandwiches option is only available later on, around lunch perhaps?
Banana Pancakes mixed Berries, 16 ringgit
Looks fancy, ey? This has to be a first for me, being served pancakes on a solid wooden platter.Β I like it π
So, the dish comes with a mini bowl with mixed berries + 2 fluffy pancakes filled with bananas + a real generous portion of good honey. In most cases, I usual have to request for a refill of honey , especially when they use a good one. Considering the price, I understand why they stinge on it but still, as a customer, you need to demand your share, especially when it comes to pancakes. Here though, they literally present you with a lot of honey, so much more than usual that it is highly likely you would request for more. I was literally jumping with glee.Β Β
The pancakes as a whole was delicious. The pancakes although is thicker than the usual ones – it is not less fluffy , with a sense of lightness to it.Β Having it on its own with the banana was good enough. Add it good honey and the sourness from the berries – one yummy pancake. Loved it.
Omelette, 18 ringgit + Sides: Toast Bread, 4 ringgit
This one was a tad pricey but no less delicious. If you want a simple, healthy meal to kick start the day – this would be a good choice. I love the mushroom x roasted tomato mix. If they had a plate filled with just that mix – I would certainly be a fan, lol. The omelette was light and fluffy, just how I like it. It however does not come with bread, so I had to put in a side order for toasted bread. Overall, it was a simple and good dish.
Would I head here again?
Yes, I would. Hopefully, the next time I pay a visit, it would be later in the day – then I can give their poke bowls, pie and sandwiches a try.
