Chicken Varuval Indian Klang Mixed Rice Rice Sri Lankan Sweet Appam

Love Mom Restaurant @ Klang – Their Appam sure is yummy!

Sometime back, I recalled reading a spread on this Sri Lankan restaurant in the Malay Mail. Apparently, their appams were delicious.  So, since it was the Labor Day holiday and the roads were mostly clear and vacant, it would be an awesome day to drive up to Klang and give this restaurant a try.

I was kindda surprise when I first arrived. My perception of Klang was that it was ‘messy’?  Of course, I have only been to certain areas – mainly the Indian street, mostly accompanying friends and family but yea, it is normal human behavior to assume you know the whole just from the sum, right? I am guilty too, lol.

Love Mom Restaurant is located in Taman Chi Liung, Unlike my initial opinion on how the whole  of Klang looked like, this neighborhood is well maintained and clean – lots of eatery all around. Mostly Chinese restaurants with some Indian and Muslim eateries. The initial plan was to eat a little at Love Mom Restaurant and then move on to the Chinese restaurant that seemed to be doing very well with their Pan Mee and etc but – we ended up eating quiet a bit at Little Mom. So, pan mee another time then.

Here, the orders are not taken by the table. They would not come to your table to take your order, unless if for some reason they saw your table empty for a long period of time. How it is done is – you head to the back of the shop, where you would see the mix rice selection, you take what you fancy and que up for your turn at the cashier. You show them your plate and order whatever other items and drinks you want, pay and then head to your table. Since this was our first time, we were kinda blur as to when and where to do what, so we sat down and observe, people-watch until we figure out what to do. The restaurant was full house, so that did not take long.

Sweet Appam + Indian Mix Rice, 15 ringgit

The Appam was sweet and decadent as it should be. Soooo yummy! Thin, crisp and crunchy on the outside and thick, warm and gooey on the inside. Be sure to be hungry when you indulge in it in order to fully appreciate its ‘sedapness’. I munched on some crackers prior to heading here, so halfway through the appam – my stomach already started feeling it.

The mix rice was delicious too. However, it got me wondering, the food kindda resembled pretty much every other indian restaurant, so which part of it was Sri Lankan? Hmmm …. anyways,  We took a generous portion of chicken varuval + 3 vegetables, pumpkin, bean sprouts and brinjals. The chicken varuval, da bomb. Be sure to pick out the meaty pieces – it’s worth it. The flavoring and the spices – yummmmmm. Mix them up with the vegetables and rice, it sure was delicious.

and did I mention that it cost me only 15 ringgit? Yup – a full plate of rice + generous portion of chicken varuval + 3 generous portions of vegetables and a sweet appam – just for 15 ringgit? Yup, true story.

Would I head here again?

I would love to. Not as often as I would like perhaps due to the distance but yea, when I am in the area, why not. If not for the rice, then certainly for the sweet appam.
