Char Siew Chicken Rice Coffee Shop Famous Char Siew

Kedai Kopi Tian Hong @ Salak South – Oooo Char Sieww :)

I’ve been to this coffee shop a number of times, mainly whenever I am in the area and in need for some yummy char siew – I head to Kedai Kopi Tian Hong. This ‘kedai kopi’ is well known around the area for serving good char siew, siu yok and the chicken variety too and people do drive all the way here to have these delicious pork meat. Of course, there is a constant debate about the yumminess of the pork meat.

Some people simply think that Tian Hong is overrated  whereas others think the char siew here is good. Some of the older folks argue that the meat tasted awesome back in the day, when the father was still manning the eatery. Ever since the sons took over , the quality has dropped. I cant say I’d agree as by the time I started paying a visit – the sons already took over and based on what I’ve tasted so far, the char siew is goooood.

This your typical Chinese coffee shop, located in the busy, cluttered business area of Salak South. During lunch hour, finding for an empty lot to park your car is a challenge but everyone double parks here. It is such a normal occurrence that no one bothers honking and instead choosing to maneuver passed the hurdles.

This coffee shop only serves char siew/ siu yok/ chicken rice , with some options for vegetables on the side and a free flow of soup.

One thing to take note  – if you are a finicky eater, you are specific about your requirements as in how lean you want it, whether you want some fats to accompany the char siew … do take time to repeat your specific requirements. For lunch, these guys are busy, more often than not, all the tables are occupied. Sometimes, the orders get mixed up. So yea, just repeat your order and they will rectify it.

I made a mistake this time. I generally like my char siew  hard and chewy only on the outside. The inner part should mostly be soft and moist. This is why I usually order my dish with some fat in it – it is usually oilier, more dense and moist but this time, with it being full house and use having to scatter around to book whatever empty table available, I decided to forego it and instead taking my chance with whatever they served me. Let’s just say that it was a mistake. The meat was more on the hard and chewy end. It was not a problem for my friends, they enjoyed themselves meat, the issue was simply me due to my preference. Well, during my next visit – I am going for some of those fats.

It isn’t all about the char siew here, the sauce they use to pour over it, also plays a big role. Just the char siew alone is okay but that thick, sweet sauce .. this elevates it to a good, yummy dish. The beauty here is that they are generous with their sauces. So, if you ever need an add on, do not hesitate to request for more.

Would I head back here?

Yup, been heading here the passed few years and will continue doing so. Food is good.

  1. Hi thanks for the post, it seems that you are the only person who posted about this kedai other than google! I remember vaguely visiting a char siu place somewhere along the LRT line (salak selatan, tasik selatan, sungai besi, etc) and I loved the char siew alot as well as a veggie dish that I don’t know the name, it tasted like Mei Cai Kou Rou. I wonder if this place sells mei chai and do you know what’s the name of the dish. Sorry if the clue is so vague, I went there more than 10 years ago!! thank you

    1. Hey there. I may not be much of a help. I head to this particular restaurant for the char siew. The few times I ventured to the back to get myself some vegetables from the mix rice section – I cant recall seeing any dish resembling the mei chai kou rou. May be there is but I usually visit later in the day, when most dishes are already emptied. So yea, I am sorry but I cant be much of a help πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™
