Cakes Good Food Hidden Pandan Gula Melaka Pulled Pork Sliders

Front Room & The Kneady Baker @ Taman Desa – A hidden delight

A friend suggested that I pay this hidden eatery a visit because the overall experience here is awesome – the food, the ambiance and the customer service, according to her, all of it deserves a 5 star rating. She is a fussy, picky eater and if she thinks something is worth a visit, then, it sure is.

Anyways, speaking of hidden. I consider this hidden not because it is difficult to find nor is it located in god knows where but more because if you do not make a conscious effort to locate it, then you’d definitely miss it. Located on the first floor, it is rather understated. There is no ‘in your face’ , obvious signage to indicated ‘we are here !!’. Get my drift? I’ll make it easy for you guys though – it is located within the same row of shops that houses Wild Sheep Chase, specifically above Hoi Kee Heng Hwa restaurant.

The ambiance, I loveeeeeeed. This eatery, it sure does have its own character, a charming one. Every corner you turn, there is something that is bound to get your interest. There were several interesting books to read at our leisure. One I particularly liked was the recorded conversations with New York cab drivers and it covers pretty much all important topics – from love, how to keep the wifey happy and work, business and dealing with crooks to simple things like finding a parking spot.Β

Customer service was awesome. I was attended to as soon as I was seated. When I needed recommendations, it was offered to me promptly. They were welcoming, friendly and always with a smile on their faces.Β

While waiting for my lunch to arrive, I decided to indulge in some dessert. Based on what I’ve seen on social media, besides serving solid meals, these guys are also popular for their cakes. I wanted something light but hey, these were cakes – how light can it get, right? I decided to take my chances with the Pandan Gula Melaka which turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Prior to ordering, I did not ask what was popular, I like what I liked and so I ordered what I fancied. This was a pleasant surprise because it was actually a sponge cake. I cant say I’ve had the Pandan Gula Melaka in this particular form of cake. Now that I did, I must say, it was goood. Compared to the usual thick and condensed cake, this was airy, fluffy and light. It certainly did not fill me up to an extend that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy lunch. Yay!Β

So, the green part was the Pandan flavored sponge cake and the brown cream was the ‘gula melaka’ bit perhaps. I didn’t not really spend much time taking in the flavors, lol. I was too busy ‘hantaming’. What I can say though is that the flavors here are subtle, it comes to you gradually. Ooooo and those walnut and almond drizzle on the top, an awesome addition. It provided a much needed crunch to an otherwise dainty dessert. Certainly not the ‘in your face’ kind. I loved it. Looking forward to giving their other cakes a go for my next visit.

There were several items that were suggested to me when asked “what’s popular” – Bianca Pizza, New York Bagel, Front Room Waffle, The American and the Pulled Pork Slider. Everything sounded appetizing but I eventually opted for the Sliders because it has been a long while since I’ve had pulled pork.

What can I say except that it taste as good as it looks. Got you all salivating, didn’t I? Yup, we are in the same predicament, buddy. I’ve had it and yet, I’m still salivating. The pork meat was da bomb and the dish as a whole was refreshing. The pulled pork is apparently slow cooked for over 8 hours – I guess that explains how they somehow achieved the perfect equilibrium between chewy-ness and softness – the ‘falls of the bone’ kind. I loved this dish. I wouldn’t mind heading back here for this exact dish again. Truly.

Would I head back here?

Yup. I totally would. My experience here was positive when it came to all the areas that counted – ambiance, food, customer service. I am happy I found this eatery.
