Soo Kee @ Ampang

This is a regular spot for us. We usually drop by at least twice a month., just to get our fill. If you like your char siew “slightly blackened, sweet, crispy and chewy and the inside was oooo tender and succulent, with just the right amount of fat” – this is the eatery to head to. It is da’ bomb. I’ve visited Soo Kee several times and they’ve been consistent.

*** Just putting it out there that there are complaints about the staff and the old uncle being rude but I personally have not been on the receiving end of such treatment, can’t comment.

Char Siew Yoong @ Peel Road, Cheras

Just like many other notable char siew restaurants, Char Siew Yoong too has been around for ages. It is a crowd favorite and is often said to be serving up one of the BEST char siew in town. Is it the best though?? It is kindda hard to say due the fact that what is considered the ‘best’ is based one individual preferences. To me, the char siew here is really good. “if you loveee the tender, juicy meat on the inside, with a perfect ration of fats and meat and it all simply deliciously melts in your mouth – then, this eatery would be awesome for you. It was yummy, it really does melt in your mouth. No joke. It sure was an experience.”  It is worth giving a try.

Meng Kee Char Siew @ Glenmarie, Shah Alam

meng keemeng kee 1

This use to be our favorite char siew spot, back when we used to live nearby and before we discovered Toast & Roast. There are several other Meng Kees that are more conveniently located but the char siew at this particular branch is perhaps the most popular, talked about. “The Char Siew was cooked to perfection. It was overall sweet and chewy with some crunchyness. Another good thing was that we were allowed to request how much fats we want accompanying the char siew. There were basically 3 options – very little fats, medium and lots of fats. I opted for a mix – medium. Yum.”   If you are in the area, it is worth dropping by.

Blog Post: Meng Kee Char Siew @ Shah Alam – One of the Best Char Siew Rice I’ve Tasted.

Address: 30, Jalan Pekedai U 1/36, HIKOM,  Glenmarie Industrial Park 40150 Shah Alam.

Opening hours: Mondays to Saturdays, 7.30 am – 4.30 pm. Sundays Closed.

Toast & Roast @ SS 2

Toast & Roast is our current favorite when it comes to char siew. Location – wise, I am mighty glad that this eatery is not located in the main part of SS 2 –  the part that is populous, often congested, whereby parking is a nightmare. Toast & Roast is located on the quieter side, nestled among a row of shops surrounded by houses. It is barely 5 minutes away from The Hub SS 2. Food served here is delicious –  “Yessss, the char siew here was utterly yummy. Sweet and succulent, tender and juicy. Notice the size of each piece? Yea, the pieces of char siew here are large.”  During peak hours (lunch time), they do get really busy, sometimes the service do suffer. Just be patient, I suppose.

Blog Post: Toast & Roast @ SS 2, PJ – I agree. Char Siew is da’ bomb here.

Address: No. 20, Jalan SS 2/72, SS 2, Petaling Jaya

Opening hours: Mon, Wed to Sundays, 8.30 am – 4 pm. Tuesdays Closed.

Kedai Kopi Tian Hong @ Salak South

This is another popular spot for char siew lovers. Head here for lunch, do prepare yourself for some waiting time because more often than not, it’s full house. The food is good and that thick, sweet sauce that poured over that pork meat elevates it from a good dish to a really good dish. Do keep in mind that although there is a system here, a system that is practiced for decades, it is somewhat dysfuntional during peak hours. Why? well, orders do get mixed up and some dishes take ages to arrive. Be patient and repeat your order, especially when it comes to the char siew – how much lean meat and how much fat you want on it. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Besides that, it’s all good, yawww.
