I’ve never heard of Yulek prior to last week. A friend of ours was back in town for the holidays and someone suggested that we go to this eatery to ‘hantam’ some no frills good food, a get-together. Apparently, Yulek is famous. It has been around for decades and they serve good Char Siew and Wan Tan Mee. Some even go as far as saying that Yulek serves one of the best Char Siew in town … really? Well, judging from the high rating online, many people seemed to agree with that sentiment. This certainly piqued all our interest and so, off we went.
Wan Tan Mee (Big) + Char Siew Rice
The Char Siew was good. Depending on the kind of texture you like on your meat, you’d either like the char siew that came with the noodles or the one with the rice. Both dishes came with thick, chunky pieces of meat. However, the Wan Tan Mee char siew was dense, juicy and tender while the rice came with meat that was a lil hard and chewy. The sweet glaze coating on the outside was perfection but the inside, that meat was sure was chewy. I still did enjoy it but not as much as I would have if I received the same char siew that accompanied the noodles. If you have a particular preference – soft and juicy or slightly harder and chewy, best let them know what you fancy beforehand.
The Wan Tan Mee was great. We ordered Large and it sure did come in a generous portion. I loved the fact that at Yulek, they use the thinner noodles here – it simply allows for a better absorbtion of flavors, don’t you think?? It had the right texture, the right taste – I could have eaten it all up on its own. The sweet, succulent, tender char siew was an added bonus. Oooo yum! Da’ bomb!
