As I had some time to spare, I was in the mood for something new. After scouring the internet for options, I came across Joloko. They have been around since 2018 but this was the first time I’ve come across them. Perhaps my rarity in venturing into this area is to be blamed. Lucky me that I came across them via Facebook. It was their menu that caught my eye – the dishes looked good and some of it had a surprisingly affordable price point. When I looked them up on Google to check ratings and reviews, they seemed to be well liked and highly rated – an average score of 4.4/5 from over 270 votes. That is quite a feat. It certainly was worth a try. I was excited because this would be a new experience for me. Why? Not only have I not been here before, I literally have no experience with Caribbean influenced cuisine.
*** Joloko is located in between Woo Pin 45 Kamunting and Stripes Hotel. It is within the same row and located next to one another. Opposite Tapestry.
This restaurant bar has a tropical theme to it. From the outside looking in, this is the first thing you’d see..
Lots of greens. As you head in, you’d see a graffiti filled sliding gate/door? that pretty much occupies most of the entrance – if you didn’t know better, you’d assume that Joloko is closed. However, as you walk closer to that gate/door, you will notice a small part of it (on the left side) open, and that is how you enter in – for now. They were doing some maintenance work at the entrance, hence why it was mostly closed off except for the passageway on the side.
As I walked in, oooo I was in loveeeeeee. It was as beautiful as it was aesthetically pleasing. The colors, the decor, the music, the food – the Caribbean influence was evident. It was an all around blissful experience. I will most definitely be back for more.
Customer service was great. They were friendly, accommodating and more than willing to have a chat. Food arrived within minutes. I’ve got no complains.
What a beauty, ey?
Grilled Pork Sandwich, 18 ringgit + Jerk Spiced Barracuda with Pineapple Salsa Sandwich, 15 ringgit, Yucca Fries, 5 ringgit
The sandwiches were delicious. You can choose your spice level – mild, normal or spicy. I opted for spicy. Part of it was the heat and the other part was pure spices, a burst of flavors. The sandwich filling was generous. The grilled pork was tender and juicy. Biting into it was divine. There was spinach, purple cabbage, purple radish, onions …. it was yummy! The barracuda sandwich is perfect if you fancy a sandwich with an array of flavors. The pineapple salsa gives you the right amount of sourness and tanginess that when mixed with the fish, pickle, onions and pineapple made up a tasty sandwich. Between the two,my favorite was the pork sandwich. I wouldn’t mind having another one right now.
My experience here at Joloko was pleasant and delightful. I definitely look forward to returning, to enjoy the good food and the ambiance, among other things.
