There is a NEW sports bar in town – one that is a whole lot bigger than usual, where food is exceptionally good. Nightly live music? Darts and pool? Ladies night FOUR days a week with a free flow of margaritas for the chikas?? Sounds a little too good to be true?? Not at all. All is possible at Dark Horse KL.

Dark Horse officially opened in August 2021 and from the looks of it, they are doing really well. Most days of the week, more often than not – they are usually full. On weekends, you would not be able to get yourself a table without a reservation. Yea, these guys are doing really well. Why?? Why do you think it is so??? π€π€
Firstly, this sports bar is huge. Perhaps the biggest I have seen in a loooooooong while. If you folks have visited Life Centre, you’d know what I am talking about. There use to be Naughty Nuri’s in this building, on the ground floor. If you’ve been there, you’d notice that it occupied a large space. Ever since it ceased operations, Dark Horse took over. Who does not love a big space when it comes to sport bars? I am soo used to it being small, cramped and crowded that this was a breathe of fresh air.
Secondly, a winning pair. This is a collaborative effort between a German and a Dutch. One used to run his own resort in Maldives and the other is /was a chef. This collab is the real deal. Their combined skillset alone is more than sufficient to ensure the success of this bar. This however is not their first business endeavor, it is their fourth. The other three are restaurants – Malai Thai, Nori Sushi and El Toro Loco. I’ve personally visited both the Thai and Spanish restaurant, both serves good food.
Third, good food. Good food is guaranteed here. These guys obviously love what they are doing and it is reflected here. You’d get good quality food at an affordable price. No pretentious, ‘pay much but get little in return’ kindda food here.It is totally worth it. They meant for Dark Horse to be a place to chill with a ‘take it easy’ vibe and that is exactly what they provide.
Fourth, ladies night and live bands. Ladies night is a usual occurance at bars and clubs, usually on one specific day of the week, where ladies usually get a free flow of drinks and/ or at discounted price. At Dark Horse however, there isn’t just one but FOUR days of ladies night in a week – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, all day long. How awesome is that? The ladies also get to enjoy a free flow of frozen Strawberry Margarita, as shown in the image below.

I loved it. It was refreshing. I’ve gone without alcohol a whole 2 years. I totally forgot what it tasted like π€£π€£ Free flow of this on ladies night, heck yea!! Even if you are not a drinker, this margarita is perfect for you. The alcoholic content isn’t high, just the right amount and with the distinct taste of strawberries, it was refreshing indeed. A margarita slurpee, that’s what it was π
Live bands play daily here which is another plus. It is sooooooo hard to find a bar with live music these days. Even if there is live music, it usually happens on a specific day of the week. What happens on other days? The mood strikes whenever and not always on the same specific day a live band is playing, what happens then? Which is why having live music daily is da’ bomb. Whenever the mood strikes, there is atleast one place you can head to where live music is guaranteed. The performances usually start from 7, 7.30 pm onwards.

Before I get to the food I ate, I think their Kinabalu Burger is worth a mention.

That sure is a huge burger. It is made up of 10 quaterpound Australian beef patties π±π±π±. It cost RM 150. However, if you can finish the whole thing, on your own, within 30 minutes – it is FREE. So far no one has dared to take up the challenge yet. People who come in groups at times order this burger to share among them. However, if you feel like you have it in you to finish the whole burger within the stipulated time – go for it. Good luck πͺπͺ
Loaded Cheese Nachos

This was sooooo ‘sedap’. Those baked corn tortillas were crispy, crunchy and most importantly – not laden with salt. It came with a serving of beef bolognese sauce and guacamole on the side. In all honestly, I was too caught up in my enjoyment of munching on the nachos on it own that I completely overlooked the sides it came with. Yea, it certainly was good.
Soup of the day: Mushroom Soup

I was initially skeptical when I was told that soup of the day was mushroom soup. This is because I generally am not a fan of thick soup and on top of that, with mushroom soup, the taste usually lingers. Uggghh ππ. Here, it wasn’t too thick or too light. It had a good texture and tasted nice too. The pastry on the top was nice and crispy. It was perfect to eat with the soup. I enjoyed it.
Lemon Butter Garlic Baramundi

I was told that this dish is a crowd favorite and I sure thought the same too. It was delicious. The fish was fresh and well cooked, not too dry and flaky. As you bite into the baramundi, you’d experience a burst of flavors. First a taste of lemon zest followed by a buttery delight. It certainly went well with the butter mashed potato I chose as my side. There are several choice for potatoes besides the mash – herb roasted potatoes, tater tots, sweet potato fries, curly fries and etc. I liked the mash and it definitely was the right combination for me. This was a lovely dish.
Club Sandwich

Just like every other dish here that was basically delicious, this sandwich was no different. Yuuuummmmmmmm ππ It is a combination of roasted chicken + smoked chicken + cheddar cheese + egg + lettuce + tomato + onions and my choice of potato : sweet potato fries. The dish also comes with a serving of coleslaw. It was really good. A wholesome yummy dish. The sandwiches were big, as club sandwiches usually are. So, I had to eat it by the layers instead, it simply was easier. No matter which part of the sandwich you separate, it somehow worked. It did not feel like I was missing a portion of meat or any other filling. You could end and start with any layer/part of the sandwich, plenty of filling to keep it going. I loved it.
… and we ended our trip to Dark Horse KL with a serving of Peach Mojito and Stella Artois.

Overall, I had an awesome time at this bar. It certainly is worth a revisit. Thank you Dark Horse KL for having us.
