Bukit Jalil Cakes Dessert Dessert Cafe Doughnut Earl Grey Sweet Peach cake Pistachio doughnut Scone

Michelle Young at Bukit Jalil – Cakes, doughnuts and scones.

Michelle Young is yet another cafe that has been regularly making an appearance on social media over the past year. What this cafe is known for is their desserts. Apparently, they offer a delicious variety. I figured that when I do end up on that side of town and am in the mood for some desserts, will keep Michelle Young in mind. A quick research online indicated that while lots of people do fancy the desserts here, some actually thought that the cafe and its desserts were overrated. So, which is it? Good desserts or hyped up mediocrity? Only one way to find out...

I finally found an opportunity to visit this eatery a few days ago. My friends and I had a short catch-up session at the newly opened mall, Pavilion Bukit Jalil. Once that concluded, all I had to do was walk next door to Aurora Place, where Michelle Young is located at.

At first glance, it somehow reminded me of an English teahouse. Perhaps it was its white, brick exterior that gave me that impression, ey? Having seen plenty of images online, for some reason, I expected it to be bigger than what it was.

When asked what was their bestseller, I was told that it was their doughnut, specifically the Pistachio one. So, I went for that. At first bite, I disliked it. I utterly detest anything has a custard-like texture, which unfortunately was exactly what the doughnut filling resembled. After the first bite though, as you start taking in more, it starts to taste appealing. Especially with the bits and pieces of pistachio crumbs, it was not just a custard filling doughnut anymore. While I disliked custard, I loveeee pistachio, so it was a quick change of sides for me. The doughnut it was was dense and flufft, light too, with a generous portion of filling. I can see why the Pistachio Doughnut is one of their popular offerings. It is nice. Would I order it again? Nope. I suspect the pistachio flavor can only work that far and the custard texture with get to me eventually. If it was perhaps a little more creamy, then I’d no doubt love it but with the custard-like texture, ummm nope.

The Earl Grey Sweet Peach cake was delicious. This dessert I liked. It was not too sweet, it wasn’t too heavy/filling. Believe it or not, I’ve tasted several Earl Grey cakes the past few years and till now, I cang really describe what it taste like. What does Earl Grey taste like, huh? I suppose it is meant to resemble the subtle taste of the Earl Grey tea. The keyword here is SUBTLE,lol. The sweet peach though, no subtlelity there. You’d be able to taste it from the get go. It is hidden and focused in the middle and bottom layer of the cake. Biting into it was a joy as it provided a burst of peachy goodness every now and then.

The scone here was not my thing. It was a tad too dry, in my opinion. The outer layer was dense, perhaps due to it being honey glazed and the inner part was too dry. With the strawberry jam though, the scone tasted better. I liked that the jam was heated, it made it easier to eat. However, despite it, I did not enjoy the scone. Having seen positive reviews online about their Earl Grey Scones, perhaps I should have given that a go as oppose to this one.

Soooo… is it all hype or are the desserts here that good? I think it depends on you and you think is good or not. I personally liked the cake, okay with the doughnut and did not enjoy the scones that much. I most probably would not be back because I live almost 30 minutes away. Pretty far away unless I happen to be in the area.
