I’ve always enjoyed going around town to discover and try out new restaurants. I especially like them if they are hidden and/or offers me something different. Kalico Cafe provided me with both. It was hidden in plain sight and as the heading states, it is literally a cafe in a house. Located along Jalan Chan Chin Mooi, nestled among some pretty large houses, is house number 8 – Kalico Cafe. There was no large signage to indicate its existence and as I was not familiar with the area, it was highly likely that I would have simply driven past it unknowingly if it was not for Waze. Waze and the fact that this particular house had a large number of cars parked around it made me notice house number 8.

Oooo yeaaaa, I liked how it looked. A large house that was well spaced out. It opened up into a few sections that was all connected. As soon as you enter, you would notice the counter and the seating area. I’d refer to this seating area as the common area, where most people choose to sit. The common area is connected to another section of the house that provides a more private setting. Where the common area can accommodate both small and larger crowds and groups of people, this area caters to smaller group of people, with fewer number of tables. We ended up sitting here simply because we had the space all to ourselves and there was a sense of privacy. Perfect for a short catch up session.
Menu

Nasi Lemak Chicken Kapitan, RM 19 + Chicken Pesto Pasta, RM 20

I enjoyed the pesto pasta. I liked the texture as well as its taste. The pasta was not too creamy and wet, it had the right amount of denseness, the taste of pesto was evident. The cashew nuts and pan seared chicken breast was a perfect addition. Yea, a good dish it was.
The Nasi Lemak Chicken Kapitan was yummy too. I liked that they retained the traditional aspect of it as oppose to modenizing it like some cafes do. The first thing that hits you would be the fragrant aroma of the ‘santan’ rice. Ooooo yum. As soon as you bite into it, you’d certainly taste it too. Add in the flavorful Nyonya style Chicken Kapitan that came with plenty of gravy, potatoes and several pieces of boneless chicken … it certainly made up one tasty plate of nasi lemak. Burp!
Cheese Brownie with Ice Cream, RM 11

I decided to end my visit here with dessert. After weighing in my options, I decided to go with a slice of brownie. This was simply because I was almost full after the pesto pasta and yet, was in need of a little sweetness to satisfy my sweet tooth. The brownie itself was RM 9 and with an additional RM 2, I get a scoop of ice cream. Why not, right? I enjoyed the dessert. It was not too heavy on the tummy and it was not overwhelmingly sweet. Vanilla ice cream on cheese brownie, a yummy combination. My sweet tooth was satisfy … for now ππ
Would I head back here? I’d love too. Kalico Coffee certainly is a nice place to ‘lepak’ at, food was tasty too. I can see myself seated at a quiet corner, having lunch while getting some work done on my laptop. Yesssss.
