A hidden gem Buka puasa promo Dry Curry Mee Good kopitiam in PJ Halal Hidden Kueh Kuih muih Mee Siam with Chicken Rendang Nyonya

Kopitiam Number 5 at Damansara Utama – A hidden gem (Halal ?)

I came across this kopitiam on my way to Ground Coffee – Ground Coffee at Damansara Utama (Pork free) a few days ago. Located along the same row of shops, as soon as I noticed this eatery, I told myself that I’d be back here soon to give Kopitiam Number 5 a try. Naturally the first thing I did was look them up online. There seem to be an air of secrecy with this eatery. There was little to no information available. How is that possible? It feels like they intentionally went out of their way to keep this kopitiam under the radar. People in this neighborhood are well aware of its existence but every one else, clueless. This made the whole experience even more intriguing and exciting.

I paid them a visit today and guess what?? Kopitiam Number 5 is a part of the popular restaurant chain, Nyonya Colors. This is my take on the whole thing. Nyonya Colors has a central kitchen next door. While doing that, they figured … why not have a small kopitiam here, one that serves people some of the dishes they cook up in that central kitchen ??? Makes sense, right?? This is strictly my opinion. I may be wrong.

(** I presume Kopitiam Number 5 is halal. Solely based on the fact that they are link to Nyonya Colors, a halal restaurant chain and the fact that food served at this kopitiam is from Nyonya Colors Central Kitchen located next door. If in doubt, do ask them directly). There is also the buka puasa promo. Only Cash is accepted here. No credit/debit card and no QR pay. Only cash $$$. Waze to Kopitiam At No. 5.

They have an array of Nyonya kueh here. Literally everything you can find at Nyonya Colors, you can see them here too. The difference is that here, I can take my own sweet time choosing what I want and I can ‘hantam’ to my hearts content. There is no long lines and large crowds to deal with. I had the place all to myself. They also have buns and scones too.

I’ve only ever been to the Nyonya Colors in Midvalley Megamall and food was pretty good. They are known for their variety of Nyonya Kueh and dishes such as Mee Siam, Nasi Lemak and etc. Similar dishes can be found here too. Having had the opportunity to try food at both locations, I am of the opinion that I like the food served at this kopitiam a whole lot better. I do not know why.

Menu

Dry Curry Mee, RM 11.90 + Thai Mee Siam with Chicken Rendang, RM 11.90

Dry Curry Mee

What is the difference between a dry curry mee and curry mee? Both taste almost the same. The difference is in the curry, I suppose. Hmmm, I am not too sure πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€” Here, it felt like I was eating curry mee and so, it’s hard for me to tell the difference between the two. I liked the curry, it was thick and flavorful. I slurped it all up till the bowl was empty. I even used the curry for the mee siam. It was delicious. The dish came served in a bowl and included lots of gravy, 3 – 4 pieces of tauhu, a mix of yellow mee, mee hoon and a juicy chicken drumstick. As for the chicken, it was soft and moist, easily fell of the bone when I dug into it. I enjoyed this dish and would order it again during my next visit.

Mee Siam with Chicken Rendang
Yummy Chicken Rendang

I enjoyed the food. Both dishes were good but I especially liked the Mee Siam with Chicken Rendang. It was da’ bomb! The noodles tasted like the ones I’ve had at Nyonya Colors except it tasted even better here and the Chicken Rendang …. ooooo yum! I opted for breast meat simply because I am lazy. Yes, too lazy to deal with bones. I am ashamed to say that till today, I’ve yet to master the art of eating a chicken clean. The chicken served came in a good size and the rendang sauce was tasty. It was an awesome addition to the noodles.

Would I be back here? Heck yea. I am totally heading back to Kopitiam Number 5 whenever possible to ‘hantam’ the other items on their menu as well as the kuehs they have on display. If you guys like hidden gems like I do, then Kopitiam Number 5 should be on your to-visit list.
