Kelate Kitchen @ Setapak – Good, affordable Kelantanese food (Halal)

** As its name suggest – this eatery offers you Kelantanese food.

** Why affordable? because we literally spent only 14 ringgit for lunch, and that too for 2 people. The dishes came in a generous portion for something that cost 5 ringgit and 7 ringgit. On top of that, it tasted good too.

Setapak is one of those areas we rarely visit – perhaps as little as once or twice a year and the only reason we were here this time was due to some furniture shopping. By the time we were done, it was around lunch time and as we were driving around, we stumbled upon Kelate Kitchen.

Based on the pictures I saw online, it seemed like Kelate Kitchen is a crowd favorite for lunch, especially for those working nearby. It is a good thing that we arrived here a lil over 11.30 am, the crowd just started picking up.

Everything here is self ordering. If you want food, you take a look at the Menu, decide what you want and then, head on to the food corner to place your order. Same goes for drinks – you head over to the drink section, place your order, collect it and bring it to your table. Once you are done with your meal, you proceed to the counter to pay and then leave.

Nasi Kukus King, 7 ringgit + Nasi Gulai Ikan Tongkol, 5 ringgit

Nasi Kukus King
Nasi Gulai Ikan Tongkol

I came here fully intending to order Nasi Dagang because it seem to be a staple at almost every other east coast eatery located in KL but as you can see, there was no mention of that particular dish on their Menu – so, no Nasi Dagang today. I wasn’t that bummed out as the other dishes available sounded equally as tempting.

Both dishes came with fried tempe + cucumber + sambal belacan. The difference between the dishes were the choices of meat. The Nasi Kukus came with a piece of juicy fried chicken thigh and gravy whereas the Nasi Gulai Ikan Tongkol comes with ‘gulai’ and fish. Concurrent with Kelantanese cuisine and their liking for sweetness, the tempe was sweet, it was quite loaded with sugar, which was a new experience for me. Never had sweet fried tempe before, lol. Surprisingly, it went well with the rest of the dish. The ‘gulai’ was a tad sweet too, not overly but just enough to taste. I suppose once everything is mixed, the sweetness blends with the other flavors – the strong individualistic taste of the ikan tongkol, the hotness and heat from the sambal belacan, the thick and slightly spicy flavor from the Nasi Kukus gravy.

Between the two dishes though, I liked the Nasi Kukus King more than I did the other dish. I cant really explain why except for the fact that the Nasi Kukus provided me a more wholesome feel? variety of flavors and the chicken. Yup.

Would I head here again?

I wish Kelate Kitchen was located somewhere nearer because if it did, I’d definitely pay them a visit again but since they are located on the other side of town – Setapak, most probably not.
