When I first came across tofu gelato, I was not particularly enthusiastic about the prospect of trying it. Initially, I envisioned it as a type of Tau Fu Fah, enhanced with flavoring to mimic ice cream. However, I soon discovered my assumptions were wrong. I am grateful that I chose to try it, as it proved to be both delicious and indulgent; each mouthful enveloped my palate with a creamy richness that melted effortlessly in my mouth. For those seeking a dessert that is both guilt free and high in protein, plant-based, and composed predominantly of wholesome ingredients, Tofu Gelato is an excellent option.
Tofu G Gelato, a premium Korean gelato brand that first launched in Singapore, has recently opened its first outlet in Malaysia, specifically at The Exchange TRX in Kuala Lumpur.

Made fresh and churned on-site, customers have the opportunity to observe the gelato-making process while sampling flavors and placing their orders. The flavors available at Tofu G Gelato include:
Tofu-Based Gelato: Featuring Original Tofu, High Protein Tofu, Sweet Corn, Korean Sweet Potato, and Pistachio.
Plant Based Gelato : Black Sesame
Exclusive in Malaysia : Pomegranate, Matcha

A serving of gelato at Tofu G is priced at RM 18 per cup. While customers may receive a larger serving size, exceeding a single scoop, the price point is, indeed, on the higher end. It is important to note that, unlike traditional gelato varieties, this offering incorporates tofu and plant-based ingredients alongside other premium and wholesome components. Upon tasting this gelato, one can appreciate the justification for the elevated price point, as the texture, flavors, creaminess, and overall taste are notably more pronounced.
Based on the flavors I have experienced, my top three favorites are Pistachio, Matcha, and Sweet Potato. The Pistachio gelato, in particular, was exquisite. Each spoonful encapsulated the distinct taste of pistachio alongside delightful crumbs. I believe that the incorporation of tofu further elevates the taste and texture of gelato. It is characterized by a smooth and creamy consistency, gradually melting in one’s mouth; during this process, the flavor profile of the dessert is truly delectable. The Matcha gelato is an ideal choice for those who appreciate tea-based desserts. The taste of matcha is prominent in every bite, yet the bitterness typically associated with it is subdued, melding seamlessly with the tofu, which enhances the flavor of the matcha with sweetness rather than bitterness.
Who would have thought that tofu would make a good base for gelato? Certainly now me. Now that I’ve had a taste, I am open to having more.
