If you find yourself in Kuala Lumpur and are looking to explore the food scene beyond the usual haunts, House of Wheat is worth the visit. Located along Jalan Tiong Nam in Chow Kit – and area I have not previously explored – the neighborhood carries an interesting history. Once known for its lively past, including as a red light area, it has since evolve into a quiet and unassuming enclave, surrounded by bungalows and double storey houses. Nestled within a row of shop lots is House of Wheat, a pleasant surprise waiting to be discovered.

Beyond the inviting earthy tones of the café’s interior, the striking replica of a rock formation, reminiscent of a canyon, instantly captured my attention. It certainly is a visual standout. The space is spacious, featuring an interior that seamlessly transitions into various seating areas. For parking, we easily found a spot by the roadside, just a short walk from a row of houses.

Sourdough with Chicken Hummus, RM 25 + Crispy Chicken Sandwich, RM 26 + Scrambled Eggs

Both main dishes were delicious and satisfying, ensuring a delightful dining experience that left us fulfilled. The Sourdough with Chicken Hummus is a unique pairing rarely found in local cafes and it sparked our curiosity. Featuring some of our favorite ingredients on a single plate, we knew we had to try it, and it certainly did not disappoint. This dish comes with four pieces of lightly toasted and buttered sourdough, each slice perfectly crisp on the outside while remaining soft within. Accompanied by a piece of grilled chicken breast resting on a creamy bed of hummus that is both rich and flavorful, the combination of textures and tastes was incredible, showcasing a perfect balance of savory and satisfying elements.

As for The Crispy Chicken Sandwich, the dish included a boneless fried chicken with a perfectly crispy exterior, coated with a dash of creamy mayo and accompanied by fresh, crisp lettuce, all nestled between two slices of lightly toasted sourdough bread that added a delightful crunch. In addition to the sandwich, a choice of sides was available, between a choice of salad and golden, crispy fries; I opted for the latter, as their enticing aroma and satisfying crunch promised to complement the sandwich well, creating a delicious and fulfilling meal experience.

The omelette was a side dish we ordered. Typically, omelettes are seldom served as requested—slightly runny and not fully cooked. However, this cafe delivered our eggs precisely how we wanted them. We relished every single bite.
Overall, our experience at House of Wheat was good. When I’m looking to dine out with friends and need a great spot, this café will be a good choice. Not only is it away from the usual places; it boasts an aesthetically pleasing ambiance and serves tasty food.
