Rogues at Bukit Gasing, Petaling Jaya – Banana leaf rice in a house, anyone?

If you seek an experience out of the ordinary, look no further. Rather than just enjoying a delectable banana leaf rice meal at a restaurant, picture yourself relishing it in a spacious bungalow where you can park and unwind at your convenience. La Salle Hall is a venue that serves as an event space, restaurant, and clubhouse for La Salle alumni. It draws comparisons to the University of Malaya’s UMAC, a charming clubhouse nestled in a colonial bungalow, complete with a Sri Lankan restaurant we frequently visit. While it’s designed as a clubhouse/alumni house/hall, both restaurants are open to public.

Operating since May last year, Rogues is highly rated on Google, with an average score of 4.9/5 from over 100 customers.

Parking lot within the compound

The establishment boasts a large land area, hence ample parking available, accommodating a minimum of 20 vehicles. The restaurant is situated within a bungalow, characterized by a classic, old-school aesthetic typical of the Petaling Jaya area. Surrounded by greenery, patrons are afforded the option to dine indoors or outdoors while appreciating the tranquil and relaxed atmosphere.

Banana Leaf Rice Set, RM 12 + Chicken Varuval, RM 8 + Fish Cutlet, RM 7

The Set includes rice, three vegetables (bayam, cabbage, cucumber), papadam, rasam, and pickle. This marks the first occasion in quite some time that I have encountered green leafy vegetables such as bayam being offered as part of banana leaf rice, which allows for refills. Typically, one finds the usual options like cucumber, long beans, taugeh, and tauhu among the selections. The vegetables were enjoyable, prompting us to request additional servings.

The curry we selected was chicken curry, characterized by its rich and thick consistency, making it an ideal accompaniment to rice. Among the two meat options ordered, I found the fish cutlet particularly enjoyable. The outer layer of the cutlet was both crunchy and flavorful, with a distinct array of spices incorporated into the dish. Its generous size sufficiently sustained me throughout most of my meal. Although the Chicken Varuval was okay, it lacked a certain ‘umph’. Additionally, it could easily be mistaken for Parathal rather than Varuval. While some may regard it as a good dish, it did not rank among the best choices available to me personally. Nevertheless, it was an overall satisfying meal.

Just based on the food alone, I’d give it a 3.9 or 4 over 5 but if together with the environment, ambiance, ease of parking and etc, the overall score will certainly be higher.

The Golden Time and Hua Xin Dessert at New Ocean World Fine Food City, Seksyen 19 PJ – Wonton Mee and tong sui.

The last time we visited New Ocean World was months ago, shortly after its opening. Since then, this lifestyle goumet mall has expanded its selection of dining establishments. Finding ourselves in the vicinity after a business meeting, we felt it was an opportune moment to visit and evaluate the new additions.

Parking is free. The building features a modern and sophisticated parking facility. This includes movable parking lifts and a designated lounge area for patrons awaiting their car when exiting.

The Golden Time

We chose to dine at The Golden Time due to their offering of Hong Kong style Wonton noodles.

Menu

Chicken Wonton Noodles, RM 12.80

The Hong Kong style noodles exhibited a pleasant springy texture, albeit regrettably lacking in flavor. Upon the addition of chili paste, an improvement in taste was discerned. The chicken wonton, on the other hand, proved to be delightful. Its tasteful, chewy, and substantial qualities made it ideal to sink my teeth into.

Hua Xin Desserts

Next, we proceeded to the adjacent dessert shop to indulge in some tong sui. This was our second visit to this establishment. The initial visit took place during their soft launch phase, when their menu offerings were limited. Subsequently, they have expanded their selection with more items.

Menu

Yam Sago, RM 13 + Ginger Soup with Glutinous Rice Balls

Yam Sago
Ginger Soup with Glutinous Rice Balls

The Sago Yam is a suitable option for those seeking a light and simple dish. Typically, this dish is prepared with coconut milk, resulting in a thick texture. In this instance, it was prepared with pure milk, possibly ox milk. Combined with a few pieces of yam and a generous portion of sago, it constituted a delightful dessert.

The Ginger Soup proved to be quite enjoyable, particularly beneficial for individuals with a sore throat. The presence of ginger resulted in a subtle warmth in the throat, which I found appealing. The inclusion of glutinous rice balls was a delightful touch, as it happens to be a personal favorite of mine. The combination of two favored items in a single dish was certainly to my liking.

Cafe in a park Dessert Free parking Greens Hidden Mutton Masala Nature New 2022: Feb Next to IKEA Damansara Orange Chocolate Tart Park 28 Pork Free Portuguese Baked Fish Set Lunch Something different

Park 28 at Mutiara Damansara – A hidden gem (Pork free)

Park 28 is a hidden gem. I’ve driven passed this particular busy road sooo many times, yet I had no idea Park 28 existed 😱😱. Opened since February this year, it is located within the Mutiara Damansara Recreational Park (next to IKEA Damansara). Entrance is by the roadside, easily accessible. This establishment exudes an air of fancyness with its country club feel, aesthetically pleasing too. If you are one of those who is an avid social media user, love taking photos and videos of anything visually pleasant, Park 28 will suit you just fine.

Parking: Plenty of parking available. As soon as you turn into the vicinity of Park 28, you’d be able to easily locate the designated area for parking, at no cost. Free of charge.

Park 28 has both indoor and outdoor seating. Just to experience both, I had lunch indoor and dessert outdoor. If you do visit on a day that isn’t raining, do sit outside. There is something appealing about being out in the greens and it is an awesome feeling being surrounded by it. Whether you visit on your own or with a large group of people, you most definitely will find a suitable spot here.

Menu

Set Lunch: Mutton Masala, RM 22.90 + Portuguese Baked Fish Fillet, RM 18.90

Since we dropped by within the 12 pm – 2 pm window, we opted to give their Set Lunch a try. Both dishes were certainly affordably priced and it included a bowl of soup as well as a glass of Iced Lemon Tea.

Mushroom Soup and Iced Lemon Tea
Mutton Masala
Portuguese Baked Fish

The soup and drinks arrived first, as it rightfully should. Soup of the day was the Campbell’s Mushroom Soup while Drink of the day was Iced Lemon Tea.

Less than 10 minutes later, our main dishes arrived. Food was good. The Mutton Masala was packed with plenty of flavors. I love the fact that it did not have the distinct, lingering aftertaste that usually accompanies this particular type of meat. The gravy was somewhat spicy and was awesome to eat with the rice.

The Portuguese Baked Fish Fillet was delicious too. It was cooked in Asam/Asam Pedas style. Boneless, tender fish with flavorful gravy and okra that was perfect to eat with the white rice that accompanied the fish.

Orange Chocolate Tart, RM10.90

Since we had a little more space in our tummies for dessert, we decided to share this tart. The Orange Chocolate Tart was decadent and appealingly bitter-ish. It had a good equilibrium between sweet and bitter, the kind you’d get from dark chocolate. I usually am not a fan of dark chocolate but the mix of chocolate and orange was rather appealing here. I liked it. It had a perfect balance of flavors.

The tart was a good end to my visit to Park 28. Would I head back here? I would. I regularly have meetings in the area and Park 28 would provide a good setting to have some of those get-together.
