Ampang cafes and restaurants Gelato grocer lifestyle mall New lifestyle mall in KL Open Daily Qra Ampang Qra at The Campus Taffy gelato The Campus Ampang Weekend activity

The Campus at Ampang, KL – the new LIFESTYLE MALL in town

There is a new lifestyle mall in Ampang, Kuala Lumpur and despite being semi occupied at the moment, this could potentially be the next best ‘tempat lepak’ in town. Formerly known as the International School Kuala Lumpur (ISKL), this establishment has been skillfully transformed into a contemporary and stylish lifestyle mall that features a grocery store, along with a variety of cafes and restaurants, dental and health clinics, a dance academy, clothing brands, event space and more.

With The Campus situated in a former international school, one can anticipate the large and spacious grounds typically associated with such institutions. The Campus exhibits a chic and retro setting, characterized by a contemporary structure that successfully preserves its ol’ school charm. Parking is easy and plenty, free of charge at the moment.

Plenty of parking spots

Mall Directory

As you can see, this mall has four floors and almost all the shop lots here have already been taken up. At this point in time though, only a few businesses are up and running. The rest are in the midst of being set up.

Here are some of the business that are already up and running ….

Some of the businesses that are already up and running

  • Qra Grocer & Bakery

  • Taffy Gelato
Madagascar Vanilla (premium flavor), RM 11.50. Milky, creamy and pleasantly sweet, taste of Vanilla in every bite

  • Jibby Chow

  • Eg’s Wok Kitchen

Some of the businesses that are in the midst of being set up

Damansara Kim’s popular Universal Bakehouse
Piccoli Lotti
Fowlboys

If you and/or your friends and family are seeking a new location to explore and enjoy, look no further. The Campus is an excellent choice. I dedicated approximately three hours here, savoring some exquisite gelato and subsequently completing my grocery shopping at Qra. I can only anticipate that this venue will attract a vibrant crowd once all occupants and vendors have commenced their operations, presenting a potentially remarkable lifestyle mall situated in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

Ampang Famous Curry Buns KL no dine in Open Daily Pork Curry Bun Something different ? takeaways only XL size

William Jumbo Bun at Ampang – Yummy curry bun 😍😍

I recently saw a post on William Jumbo Bun (WJB) making the rounds on social media. This neighborhood bakery is known for their large curry filled buns. Chicken curry, mutton curry, fish curry, pork curry … it is all available here. It has been on my ‘restaurants to visit’ list for a while now and since I had a meeting in the area today, it was a good time to visit WJB.

Unlike other visits, for some reason I did not do a quick research on this eatery prior to dropping by. If I did, I would know that WJB is NOT located in a proper shop anymore. Perhaps due to the pandemic, they needed a more affordable location to rent nearby and have since moved to a house. Whatever image you see online of a shoplot with a proper signage is not applicable anymore. They have moved.

If you are not familiar with the area, best use WAZE. As much as it may seem like perhaps the location is wrongly tagged, it is not. It will lead you right to it. Once you are there, do look out for house number 1111A. There is no signboard or any other signs to indicate that William Jumbo Bun is located there. So, keep your eyes open.

There is NO DINING IN, only takeaway and delivery. I was not aware of this either and got dressed up for nothing, lol. I did not call ahead to order and so, by the time I arrived at 12.30 pm, there was only one bun left. It was suggested to me that for my next visit, best call ahead to order, a day before preferably. Since I did not do so, my only option was whatever that was left, which in this case was the Pork Curry Bun. I was soooooo looking forward to their chicken curry option but pork curry it is.

Pork Curry Bun, RM 38

This sure was an XXL sized bun, meant for at least three pax. The size took us by surprise. Sure, we’ve seen the pictures and videos, we do know that we would be served a large bun but I personally did not anticipate it to be this big. Big and cute. Sooooo cute that I felt a tad bad for having to rip it apart to get inside.

As you start tearing into it, you would find the gravy wrapped in plastic. The first 5 seconds would seem a bit anticlimatic because up to that point, you are all hyped up to get right into it, get all messy but then, you come across this layer of plastic that is preventing the very mess you anticipated. Whaaattttttt???? After those 5 seconds though, your brain catches up and you’d realize that this is a good thing. No mess is a good thing, especially for those of us eating in the car.

Once you open up the plastic layer and the delicious aroma of the pork curry hits your nosebuds, it will get your tummy rumbling for sure. Tearing off a piece of bread and dunking it into the tasty gravy was awesome. The best way to enjoy it is to dunk it all in and leave it be for a while, give it time to soak the curry up and then enjoy.

It was delicious, really tasty. I liked it very much. Plain dense bun with thick, flavorful pork curry gravy. Yummm! The gravy also came with a few pieces of potatoes and pork meat. It may seem simple but it sure does fill you up. Burp! Burpppppp!

Would I return to WJB ? Yes, I look forward to trying their Chicken Curry Bun. Remember folks, if you are interested in the large buns here, do place your order the day before by calling the number provided below.

Ampang Brioche Creamy Pasta Florist Cafe Instagrammable Open Daily Pasta Smoked Salmon Sandwich

Fine Coffee & Flowers @ Ampang – A cozy florist cafe (Pork free)

We ended up on this side of town after a work meet. My fellow friends who lived in the area regularly refered to this particular part of Ampang as Korean Town and Fine Coffee & Flowers as a Korean themed cafe.

I had no idea what they meant. I do not know what Korean theme was suppose to look like and neither have I ever heard of ‘Korean Town’. As they are often a bunch of jokesters, I paid no attention to them … until I saw a post online regarding the cafe. It looked nice, instagrammable. Since I was in the area, best drop by and pay a visit.

Oooookay. Upon reaching, I think I figured out the Korean town part. There was literally a whole row of Korean related shops here. A few doors away from the cafe was a Korean mini mart. I decided to check it out first as I saw people regularly dropping by.

If you guys live nearby and love Korean food and snacks, this mart has plenty of options. FYI.

After that short stop, we walked over to Fine Coffee & Flowers.

Fine Coffee & Flowers is a florist cafe with an instagrammable setting. Pretty and cozy it was. It had flowers at every corner, some greens too. The ambiance and feel of the cafe was rather whimsical. I liked it.

Customer service was good. They attended to us as soon as we sat. Food arrived rather quickly too.

Menu

Smoked Salmon Sandwich, RM 25 + Creamy Pasta, RM 23

Smoked Salmon Sandwich
Creamy Pasta

I was told that the desserts here were scrumptious. However, as I’ve yet to have lunch at that point, I needed something a little more solid. A dish that caught my eye was the Smoked Salmon Sandwich. The smoked salmon was a plus but the use of brioche was the main appeal for me. I loveeee brioche and when made right, it simply is divine to bite into.

This was divine indeed. Once toasted, it was buttery and soft. Those sandwich buns with a layer of scrambled egg, smoked salmon, cheese and greens made up a yummy sandwich.

The Creamy Pasta was exactly as its name suggest. Fusilli pasta with 2 pieces of tender grilled chicken, soaked in a thickened cream and cheese combination. A simple yet filling dish.

Would I head back here? I would love to but perhaps not as often as I would like as location-wise, it’s a good 30 minutes from where I live. If you find yourself on this side of town and intend to cafe hop, Fine Coffee & Flowers would make an awesome addition to the list.

Address: C2-1, Jalan Ampang Utama, Ampang.

Opening hours: Open Everyday. 9 am – 6 pm.

Ampang Ampang cafe Bagel Chicken Pesto Sandwich Food Open Daily Pork Free Sandwich

28 Fireplace at Ampang – Exactly What I Needed (Pork free)

It has been a while since I last step foot in Ampang, decided today to pay that place a visit. Did some research and noticed that 28 Fireplace has been garnering positive reviews throughout the several years it has been in operation. This cafe is located just 5 minutes away from TAFT ( The Artisan Food Trail (TAFT) @ Ampang – Love it ! ) and is nestled within a row of shops. If you follow Waze, it will lead you right to it – but lemme tell you, when I was nearing the place, I kindda hoped that that row of shops was not the row of shops I thought it was, because I have passed that row of shops before and it was mostly  made up of motocycle & car repair shops and appliances shops. I dislike eating at places that are surrounded with these kind of shops because it usually is messy and just yuck. Soon enough, I realized that Waze is saying that I gotta pass this row of shops, turn left and head on to the back – and I was flabbergasted, for reals yawww. When I see the row of shops at the front, which by the way is right beside a rather busy road – I cringe, cause it is soooo not the kind of place I would hang out at and then when I saw the back – which I did not know existed , I was like ” Woa, holy shit! I like it, totally a place I can hang out at.” There is only about 10 shops on this row, almost all of them are eateries.

Guess who also occupies one spot here – La Risata yawww. I’ve only been to the one in Damansara and I loved the food there. I think it is their Modus Operandi to open shop at a higher end but understated neighbourhood, A distinguish and elegant neighborhood that is home to a row or two of shops and La Risata parks themselves right in the middle of it all and swim in its glory. Same this here in Ampang. 28 Fireplace is located within a row of shops that is surrounded by a neighborhood, a fancy one at that. This neighborhood which is also home to several embassies, oozes old school charm and elegance. Loved it. Right next to 28 Fireplace is The Daily Grind, who are notable for the gourmet burgers they offer. There is a bar few doors away and a Mexican restaurant. Good food, good vibes, good ambiance, lovely neighborhood and friendly people – what more do you need? Awesomeness Overload! I am definitely coming back. Okay, now back to 28 Fireplace and my review.

The inside of the cafe was pretty vibrant and cozy. There were all sorts of decorations going on around the eatery – a christmas tree,  empty picture frames, old designer tins and plaques, which were both charming and fascinating. Another intriguing fact would but the existences of a fireplace imitation right in the middle of the cafe, which answers the “Firehouse” in its name. As for the 28, it is because the shop is operating in lot number 28. Now we know why the cafe is named 28 Fireplace, lol.

Pesto Chicken, 18 ringgit

20170606_122127

I was impressed. The dish arrived within 5 minutes and it tasted soooooo delicious.  I am sure by now, my liking for anything pesto is blatantly obvious, which was why I wanted to give this sandwich a go. I loved it. The dish came with mildly toasted sourdough bread + roasted herb chicken + homemade pesto sauce + spinach. Can you see the amount of chicken that came with the sandwich? It sure was in generous portion, with thick pesto sauce. Soo yummy, the perfect blend of crunchy and creamy. A side of salad accompanied this dish and in that they were generous too – spinach, salad greens and sprouts. This healthy goodies occupied at least half the plate, once you mixed it all up. Loved it and I would certainly order it again.

Morning Bagel, 25 ringgit

20170606_12204320170606_122046

This was another yummy dish. I have not come across many cafes that utilizes bagels as a means of making a sandwich sort of dish and after all, it came recommended – so, I thought why not and this is how I ended up giving the Morning Bagel a try. This dish consisted of a poppy seed bagel + sunny side up egg + grilled pineapples + smoked turkey ham + caramelized onions + cheddar cheese. Man, this was soooo good, I kid you not! The whole combination worked and it offered me a burst of flavors that only left me wanting and grasping for more. There was sweetness from the pineapple and caramelized onions, creaminess from the sunny side egg and cheese and the meaty spiciness from the turkey ham. Another one worth ordering again.

Would I head here again?

Heck yeah!
