Asian Flat noodles Garrison Special Noodle Hainanese Chicken Chop Local Local food Muslim Friendly Open Daily Roti Bakar Brioche Roti bakar with butter + kaya Seksyen 17 PJ food Seventeen Mall food

Fort Garrison at Seventeen Mall, Seksyen 17, PJ – Hainanese Chicken Chop, Brioche Roti Bakar and Dry Noodles (Muslim friendly)

The only Fort Garrison that I am aware of is a military post located in the United States. Hence, the discovery of a restaurant sharing this name, offering a combination of Hainanese and local cuisine, was quite surprising. I came across this establishment while driving past the mall in search of an available roadside parking space. Although I was unable to locate an empty parking spot, I did find a suitable place to have lunch.

The restaurant is situated on the first floor, which is also home to the grocer, Urban Marketplace, and Ren Ren Noodles. If there are no empty roadside parking available, worry not as parking is available within the mall itself.

The restaurant was characterized by an open and expansive layout, embodying a simplicity that is both elegant and refined. Should I have business meetings in the vicinity, I would welcome the opportunity to hold them here. The space is sufficiently large to afford privacy and is quiet enough to facilitate a conducive and productive meeting environment.

Menu

Roti Bakar Brioche with Butter & Kaya, RM 7.80

If I were to close my eyes and take a bite of this, it would evoke the sensation of consuming a slice of ordinary white bread; however, the distinction lies in its texture. Although visually it did seem like one will be biting in a crunchy Roti Bakar, on the contrary, it was actually soft and dense. Accompanied by a delicate layer of butter and a spreading of kaya as filling, this dish proved to be quite delectable.

Garrison Special Noodle, RM 15.90

If one seeks a noodle dish that will fill up the tummy, the Garrison Special Noodle may be an appropriate choice. It consists of a generous serving of flat noodles accompanied by two fried dumplings, two sizeable strips of chicken, an egg, tauhu, and bak choy. The gravy that envelops the noodles did not appeal to my palate; however, upon mixing in the accompanying chili oil, the flavor profile was significantly improved. Ultimately, it was a tasty dish.

Hainanese Chicken Chop, RM 22.50

This dish is among their recommended selections, a staple at kopitiam – the Hainanese Chicken Chop. The dish was quite good. The gravy was flavorful and accompanied by a portion of peas and carrots. The chicken was served fresh from the stove, maintaining its heat and juiciness. The crunchy outer layer of the meat had minimal taste and was almost nonexistent once coated with the sauce, causing it to effortlessly detach from the meat. I chose to forgo the skin and savored the chicken in its pure form. Additionally, this dish was paired with a serving of wedges. Overall, while this dish is quite filling, I will likely not order it again. I shall opt for a different dish instead.

Would I consider returning to Fort Garrison for another visit? Given that I frequently find myself in the vicinity and did enjoy some of the dishes I tried, I shall indeed revisit this establishment.

Claypot Chicken Rice Curry Mee Good kopitiam in PJ Kopitiam Local cuisine local favorites Local food Muslim Friendly Nasi Lemak Bungkus Pj New Town PJ New Town food

Ipoh Kopitiam at New Town, PJ – Good food (Muslim friendly)

After a quick stop at Mr DIY, we proceeded to the next item on our itenary – where to have lunch? We circled the block and in the midst of doing so, noticed this restaurant. A quick check on Google suggested that one can find a selection of local food here, which sealed the deal for me.

We arrived after the lunch hour, which was ideal as the crowd had significantly reduced by that time. Consequently, we had the space all to ourselves and the food was served quickly.

Menu

Nasi Lemak Bungkus, RM 3

I am not one to resist Nasi Lemak Bungkus. There were six packets of them, stacked together and kept on display at my table. Despite my efforts to resist the allure, I ultimately succumbed. The dish proved to be delightful and evoked fond memories of my childhood. The sambal possessed a slightly spicy kick complemented by a subtle sweetness, and when combined with peanuts, anchovies, rice, and an egg, it created a harmonious and delectable dish.

Ipoh Curry Mee , RM 10.80

This Curry Mee was potent. It certaonly did live up to the ‘Curry’ in Curry Mee. I generally prefer milkier versions of this local favorite and usually not a fan of a dish that taste like it was packed with curry powder but suprisingly, this one I enjoyed. Together with some fishballs, chicken strips, fuchuk, tauhu and noodles, this was an enjoyable dish.

However, it is advisable to exercise caution when incorporating their sambal into the Curry Mee, as it significantly elevates the spice level. I underestimated this aspect and added an entire spoonful to my bowl, ultimately resulting in considerable discomfort.

Claypot Chicken Rice, RM 16.80

I was pleasantly surprised by the good quality of this dish. It possessed the authentic flavors one would expect. The portion of rice was ample enough for sharing, complemented by a generous serving of chicken topped with garnish of spring onions. I liked this dish. I must note, however, that I may be slightly biased. My assessment may be influenced by the fact that it has been several years since I last consumed this dish.

My experience at Ipoh Kopitiam was quite positive. I anticipate my return and the opportunity to try their Tang Hoon Goreng in the near future.

Good Mee Goreng Mamak in KL Good Nasi Goreng Kambing in KL Kampung Datuk Keramat food Local food Mee Goreng Mamak Muslim Friendly Muslim operated Nasi Goreng Kambing Open Daily Restaurant in a bungalow Theme

Paku & Pontianak at Kampung Datuk Keramat, KL – An awesome find (Muslim Friendly)

We found ourselves in the vicinity as a result of a drive around Kuala Lumpur. Kampung Datuk Keramat is an area I seldom visit, yet we inadvertently arrived here. It was while passing several residences that we came across Paku & Pontianak. Situated within a residential neighborhood, the establishment is essentially a two-storey bungalow.

From its name, one could expect an eerie theme. Consistent with that, the restaurant’s ambiance is notably somber and dimly lit. The walls are adorned with a narrative depicting the history of Pontianak, which I found particularly intriguing, alongside various decorations relevant to the theme. The customer service was exceptional; upon our arrival, we were promptly seated. Female customers are presented with a rose, which I found to be a memorable touch. Following this, we were presented with the menu and afforded time to make our selections. For those, like ourselves, in need of some recommendations, the staff was more than willing to assist.

Menu

As previously stated, we were initially uncertain regarding our selections, as every item on the menu appeared appealing. Fortunately, with some help from the waiter, we ultimately selected two dishes. These choices proved to be exceptional and have remained memorable, lingering in my thoughts even days later.

Mee Goreng Mamak, RM 12.90 + Nasi Goreng Kambing, RM 25.90

Mee Mamak Goreng

We were informed that this dish was delicious, and indeed it was. For fans of Mee Goreng Mamak, this is a MUST order. The dish presented here is reminiscent of how it was traditionally served several decades ago, the original (OG) . With a slightly sweet flavor profile, complemented by tender pieces of potatoes and chewy cucur, it truly evoked a sense of nostalgia. I have tried more than a few variations of Mee Goreng Mamak around town in search of one that resembled the dish from my childhood, yet none compared. However, I was pleased to discover it here at Paku and Pontianak. I thoroughly enjoyed this dish and am grateful for the recommendation. Priced affordably at RM 12.90, this dish exceeded my expectations.

Nasi Goreng Kambing

This was yet another recommended dish that proved to be exceptional. I have always liked Nasi Goreng Kambing; however, I rarely order it due to past experiences of being disappointed. The dish typically commands a higher price point, yet the quantity of goat meat used in the fried rice has reduced significantly over time. When asked about this reduction, I am often informed that the cost of goat meat has risen. While I acknowledge this fact, isnt that why this dish typically is pricier than other types of fried rice? There ought to be decent amount of meat present.

Here, I was informed that the dish was flavorful and worth trying, so I decided to take a chance and order it. It was indeed excellent. There was an ample quantity of meat, and the pieces were sizable, each infused with spices. The combination of the meat and rice was impeccable. Each mouthful was a delightful explosion of flavors. It is certainly worthy of a recommendation.

Teh Tarik Ais, RM 7.90 + Teh Tarik Panas, RM 5.90

We opted to try one of their crowd favorites, the Teh Tarik. It possessed a flavor akin to that of the Teh Tarik commonly found at local Mamak establishments. I found it quite pleasant.

All in all, this was a memorable find. I enjoyed my time at Paku and Pontianak. Would I consider returning for another visit? Indeed, I would.

Bangsar South food Chicken Rice Kopitiam Large menu Local food New 2023: March New kopitiam at Bangsar South Open Daily Pork Free Satay Fried Kuey Teow

Hock Kee Kopitiam at Bangsar South – The latest addition (pork free)

One thing I always thought Bangsar South needed was an ol’ school kopitiam that serves the local Malaysian favorites. This area, despite being small in size, literally is a food paradise for those from this side of town. With a variety of cuisines available, one is literally spoilt for choice here. Despite that though, I always thought an ol’ school kopitiam will be a hit here. Yes, there is Ali, Muthu and Ah Hock but …. I dont knowlahh, for some reason it does not register in my head as a kopitiam and most importantly, the food at the Bangsar South outlet is somewhat mediocre.

Anyways, when I saw Hock Kee a month a go, boy was I excited. I waited and waited for the right time to give it a try and a month later, here I was. Why a month later?Well, this kopitiam has been a hit since it opened doors among the folks working in the area. During lunch hour, its always full house with a long waiting line. The best time to visit is perhaps during the weekends or during non peak hours as well as public holidays.

The kopitiam is located on the Ground floor of Nexus in Bangsar South. Parking was easy. Especially with the Raya holidays at the moment, The basement carpark at Nexus was mostly empty during my visit. Parking rates were: RM 2 for first hour, RM 2 for each subsequent hour.

Despite me dropping by after lunch hour, the eatery was still busy. It was mostly occupied with some empty seats here and there. Still a loud, boisterous environment, filled with overlapping conversations. Ordering was easy as there was a QR code ordering system whereby you scan the code, access the menu and place your order online. The only downside to that is their enormous menu. They offer a variety of dishes and going through the menu on the phone was quite ‘lecehlahhhh’. Food arrived pretty fast.

Menu

….. Yup. Imagine scrolling through this on the phone? Pening oooooooo. Soooo many dishes.

Satay Fried Kuey Teow, RM 15.90

This dish was tasty but it was missing two things. Firstly, the satay. Where is this satay? I did not see any satay on my plate. Satay is skewered meat, usually served with peanut sauce. There was peanut sauce but no satay. It is very misleading to include the word SATAY in a dish and then not provide it. Haiyaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Satay Fried Kuey Teow is not a common combination and as it included 2 dishes I liked, hence why I decided to order this dish. If you are not going to provide the satay and instead only serve up fried kuey teow with a side of peanut sauce, then its FRIED KUEY TEOW WITH PEANUT SAUCE and not SATAY FRIED KUEY TEOW. 🥺🥺

Secondly, it was missing the charred taste that I usually looked forward to when I order this dish. This was more of a personal preference. If you are one who do not care about ‘wok hei’, then it would not matter to you as much as it matters to me. That being said, the dish was tasty nonetheless. It included noodles, prawns, eggs, taugeh with a side of peanut sauce. The sauce resembled a nasi lemak sambal but it was mostly made up of peanuts, crunchy and sweet-ish. Tasted surprisingly good when eaten with the noodles.

Steamed Chicken Rice, RM 14.50

This chicken rice was yummy, I enjoyed it. The chicken was soft and tender, juicy too and soaked in ketchup that I naturally used as gravy for the soft rice. Add in the chili and ginger paste…. ooo yummy. I was satisfied with this dish.

Would I head back here? Yes, I would. Not only is Hock Kee conveniently located, there are also many more dishes for me to try. I look forward to it.

Chee Cheong Fun Good kopitiam in PJ Local food Nasi Lemak Nasi Lemak with Ayam Goreng Berempah Pork Free Roti Bakar Roti bakar with butter + kaya

Say Yes Cafe at Uptown, Damansara Utama – Yummmm (Pork free)

I’ve driven passed Say Yes several times the past few months and have consistently seen it being crowded during lunch hour. This time, I decided to drop by for a try. This cafe with a kopitiam-feel has been around for more than a year and is located opposite Starling Mall. This is convenient because parking by the roadside is almost impossible during the day as empty parking spots are difficult to come by … unless you intend to double park. So, I ended up parking at Starling Mall instead. Lucky me as it was reasonably priced – first hour free, second and third hour cost RM 1 each.

As mentioned previously, this cafe has a kopitiam feel to it. During lunch hour, do expect plenty of chatters, conversations overlapping one another. I liked the busy atmosphere. The best part however was how fast they delivered all the dishes we ordered. Within 8 minutes, all our dishes were served. I was impressed.

Menu

Chee Cheong Fun (Set), RM 9 + Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng Berempah, RM 11.40 + Roti Bakar with Butter & Kaya, RM 3

Chee Cheong Fun
Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng Berempah
Roti Bakar

Food here was good. We started off with the Nasi Lemak because many reviews on Google suggested the dish. Apparently it was delicious with fragrant fluffy rice, tasty sambal and yummy fried chicken … and yes, it was spot on. The Nasi Lemak was gooooood!. I loved the fried chicken and it sure was ‘berempah’. From the first mouth in, you’d be able to taste it. That with the tasty sambal, kacang, egg and coconut rice made up a delicious dish.

The Chee Cheong Fun was way better than expected. I was amazed. I certainly wouldn’t mind ordering it again. You’d get 2 choices for this dish – the normal option which includes the noodles + gravy or the Set, which includes omelette, fishcakes and fuchuk in addition to the noodles + gravy. Do give the Set a go, it is worth it and filling enough that it can be considered a main meal. Yummm!

We ordered the Roti Bakar because we noticed many table ordering it. If it wasn’t the Roti Bakar, it was either the Roti Kukus or Croissant with Butter and Kaya. It was good too, with a generous amount of kaya, crunchy and sweet at the same time.

Would I head back here? Yes, why not. Food was good.

Basil Minced Chicken Rice Bubur Cha Cha Curry Laksa desserts Good ambiance Local food Ol' School Petaling street Pork Free

Warong Old China at Petaling Street – Old school charm (Pork free)

Since we had time on our hands for the day, we decided to drop by Warong Old China for lunch. This 1 year old eatery has always been within my line of sight whenever I head to KL City Centre via Brickfields but timing was not right to drop by … til now 😊

Parking: As the restaurant is located along a busy road, parking by the roadside was not possible during peak hour. So instead, we parked at Central Market. It cost us RM 5 for 2 hours. As Warong Old China was located a 5 minutes walk away, parking here was a good decision. Alternatively, you can take the train to Pasar Seni station and walk over, 5 minutes walk too.

This is one of those eateries where you’d feel like you got transported back in time as soon as you stepped in. Niceeeeeee. The decor and the feel this restaurant exudes is certainly ol’ school.

Customer service was good. We were immediately attended to once seated. Food arrived within 10 minutes.

Menu

Bubur Cha Cha, RM 7.90 + Warong Curry Laksa, RM 16.90 + Basil Minced Chicken Rice, RM 16.80

Bubur Cha Cha
Curry Laksa
Basil Minced Chicken Rice

The two dishes Curry Laksa and Bubur Cha Cha were my favorites while the Basil Minced Chicken was so so.

The Bubur Cha Cha arrived first. It was a tad sweeter than what I was use to but I liked it alot. The dish consisted of coconut milk with gula melaka, sago, sweet potato and yam. It has been more than a year since I’ve had bubur cha cha and having it here was awesome, I enjoyed it lots.

The Warong Curry Laksa was delicious. It came with a choice of 3 noodles of which I opted for a mix of kuey teow + mee hoon. It was a good combination to be eaten with the thick, milky curry gravy. The gravy was yummy. I enjoyed slurping on it. The dish also included tauhu, taugeh, egg and fishcakes.

The Basil Minced Chicken was okaylah. It was a choice between this and Belacan Fried Rice …. and I should have gone with the fried rice because that was delicious, this was so so. It was a dry dish. Usually, with the minced chicken, it will be served with some gravy on it but here, it was just stir fried minced chicken with basil leaves and long beans. The only gravy was from the cili ketchup, which is not a gravy at all. The runny egg yolk helped a little but once it was all eaten, its back to dry. They should add on a gravy.

Would I head back here? Yea, why not. I look forward to trying their Mee Siam, Pineapple Fried Rice and etc. Since parking was not as difficult, I would not mind dropping by for another visit soon.
