Following a recent article published by The Edge regarding this establishment, I chose to dine at Aneka Nyonya Kuih for lunch. Located within a row of shops in Seksyen 14 of Petaling Jaya, commonly referred to as ‘Jalan 222’, this newly established restaurant, which has been in operation for more than one month, is rapidly gaining popularity among the residents in the neighborhood. As a fan of Nyonya cuisine, particularly the ‘kuih-miuh’, I was pleased to discover that they offer a good selection, mostly priced at RM 1.90 per piece.

Menu

Kuih Lapis, RM 1.90 + Kuih Angku, RM 1.90 + Nasi Lemak Bungkus, RM3.90

Both kuih I selected were among my childhood favorites and have remained so throughout my adulthood. The Angku kuih featured a generous portion of green bean paste, ensuring that I experienced the filling in each bite. It was one of the establishment’s bestsellers, as by the time I returned for a second piece within 30 minutes, it was sold out. As for the Kuih Lapis, this particular layered dessert consisted of a base of pulut in the lower half, complemented by a pandan-infused green layer of stickiness on the top. It was not overly sweet, and each bite was thoroughly enjoyable.
There were two options available for Nasi Lemak: one being the cheaper, traditional variant served wrapped in a banana leaf, and the other, a pricier option presented on a plate that includes a piece of fried chicken thigh. I chose the ‘bungkus’ version due to my preference for the simplicity of flavors and visual associated with this particular option. The act of unwrapping the dish was fun, revealing the rice accompanied by sambal, half a boiled egg, a few peanuts, and crunchy anchovies. While sambals typically exhibit either a spicy or sweet profile, this particular sambal was somewhat neutral, offering instead a pleasant zesty flavor. I would have preferred it to be slightly spicier, although that is a matter of personal taste. Overall, I liked this Nasi Lemak Bungkus and would gladly consider ordering it again.
Pan Mee Kicap Ayam, RM 15.90

Between Fried Mee Hoon and Pan Mee, we chose the latter. The dish proved to be quite enjoyable. As an individual who consumes pork, I typically find the non-halal version to be better. Nevertheless, this chicken version was nice. The noodles, accompanied by minced chicken, fried anchovies, and mushrooms, offered a satisfying experience. I did not feel the absence of pork lard however, if given a choice, I will likely still go for what I am familiar with – the minced pork version. The dish also included a side of spinach soup and sambal.
