Chicken Satay Good satay in KL Good satay in Sentul Hidden Gem Kambing satay Muslim operated Satay Sentul

Discovering Sate Kasim: A Hidden Satay Gem in Sentul Market (Muslim operated)

I had a strong craving for juicy satay but wanted to explore something new instead of sticking to my usual stalls and restaurants. While browsing reviews online, I discovered the neighborhood gem, Sate Kasim, a well-loved satay stall situated in the bustling Sentul Market.

Navigating through an unfamiliar market is not a concern here, as the stall is visible from the roadside. The Sentul pasar is a small, single-storey establishment which made identifying the satay stall is a breeze. While the establishment may not be the cleanest and has a bit of a messy feel, one can comfortable eat here.

Visiting on a weekend night made it a breeze to find a parking spot, with plenty of kerbside parking available just outside the market. I can only imagine that during the day, the market buzzes with excitement, teeming with people bustling about, purchasing fresh vegetables, meat, fruits, and so much more. At night, even though the market itself is closed, it transforms into a dinner spot beloved by locals, featuring a satay stall, a ‘goreng-goreng’ stall, and a drinks stall.

For this visit, we only tried the satays, but I must say that the aroma from the ‘goreng-goreng’ stall was enticing. I intend to give them a try during my next visit.

Menu

Chicken satay (left), Kambing satay (right)

I chose to try the chicken and mutton satay, and I must express my satisfaction with the experience. Of the two, the mutton emerged as my preferred option. Before grilling, the satays were immersed in a yellow sauce, presumed to contain turmeric. This sauce provided subtle hints of citrusy sweetness, which I found quite appealing. The mutton, in particular, was cooked well, exhibiting the appropriate level of chewiness. I thoroughly enjoyed it. As for the chicken satay, the meat was tender yet retained a delightful chewiness. I appreciated that the fat included was minimal in size, thus preventing an overwhelming oily aftertaste, which I typically find unappealing.

Overall, it was a satisfying experience. Not only was I able to fulfill my cravings, but I also had the opportunity to discover a new establishment. I shall return, especially for their mutton satays. Furthermore, I look forward to trying the offerings from the ‘goreng-goreng’ stall, Mee Hoon Goreng perhaps.

Asian & Western Char Kuey Teow Lemonade Moringa Lime juice Satay Sentul Vegetarian

The Black Cat Cafe at Sentul, KL – A highly rated vegetarian restaurant in the area

Scoring an average of 4.7 out of 5 from over 450 reviewers, it is evident that The Black Cat Cafe enjoys considerable popularity and is highly regarded for its vegetarian offerings. I have been informed that the meatless dishes served here are notably palatable and closely resemble their meat counterparts. As I was intrigued to experience this for myself, i opted to drop by for a visit.

The color palette of the eatery is visually soothing. However, its decor is comprised of an eclectic assortment of items, including a variety of cat figures, paintings depicting Indian-themed women, travel motifs, and spiritual elements, among others. There does not appear to be a singular cohesive theme; rather, the decor presents a medley of items that collectively contribute positively to the overall ambiance of the cafe.

Menu

Moringa Lime, RM 10.90 + Lemonade, RM 9.90

Moringa Lime (left), Lemonade (right)

Rarely have I encountered a restaurant offering a selection of Moringa beverages. Moringa is renowned for its nutritional benefits, serving as a valuable source of vitamins, contributing to the maintenance of optimal heart health, and aiding in the regulation of blood sugar levels, among other advantages. While typically bitter in flavor, this establishment has successfully crafted a drink reminiscent of a blend between apple and celery juice. The acidity from the lime provided a pleasing complement to the other ingredients. Although I would normally request a ‘less sweet’ variant of a drink, the sugar syrup added in this instance was proportionate and enhanced the overall experience of the drink. It is indeed a delightful concoction.

The lemonade exhibited a thicker consistency than is typical; however, it proved to be quite refreshing. It was certainly not the customary method of simply squeezing a lemon, adding a piece of it to the drink, and serving it. This preparation was distinctly unique.

Satay Vegan, RM 15.90

I ordered this dish as an appetizer. At first glance, the price of RM 15.90 for five skewers of satay may seem somewhat excessive; however, the ‘vegetarian’ version has consistently been priced at double or even triple that of its meat counterpart. The flavors of the satay were exquisite, and I appreciated the subtle undertones of curry-like spices in every bite. However, if I am not mistaken, a mushroom base was utilized in this preparation, and I generally favor a soy-based satay due to my preference for its texture and superior ability to retain flavors. Nonetheless, the overall flavor of the satay was delightful.

Char Kuey Teow, RM 14.90

This dish was quite enjoyable. The flavors were good, and its presentation was appealing. I did not feel the absence of meat while consuming it; however, I must concede that a bullseye egg placed atop the noodles would have elevated the dish to a superior level. Lol.

Would I revisit The Black Cat Cafe? If I am in the area and favor a vegetarian meal, then yes, I will. I’ve heard good things about the Tandoori Paneer Pizza served here and I intent to try it next.

Chicken Satay Halal Mee Kari Muslim operated Pj Old Town food Roti Jala with Chicken Curry Satay Vintage theme

Tingkap Cafe at PJ Old Town – Simple yet tasty (Halal)

PJ Oldtown isn’t an area I’d associate with cafes. Sure, there are plenty of food offerings, restaurants in the area but let’s be honest, cafes are few. So, when I read about Tingkap Cafe online, it certainly piqued my interest.

This eatery is less than a month old, officially opened since 4th of February. It is muslim operated, halal. For those of you who fancy vintage themed cafes, you’d enjoy yourselves here. I certainly did with the ol’ school charm it exuded.

Menu

They also have prepacked items like – Nasi Lemak, Nasi Dagang, Bihun Goreng and etc. All were sold out by 12.45 pm. So, if you intend to try those, be sure to drop by earlier.

Mee Kari, RM 9.50 + Roti Jala with Chicken Curry, RM 5.50 + 10 sticks of Chicken Satay, RM 15

Mee Kari
Roti Jala with Chicken Curry
Chicken Satay

Food was simple yet tasty. The Mee Kari arrived first. Oooooo, I liked the chicken curry, thick and packed with flavor. The dish also included yellow mee, chicken, egg, taugeh, tauhu, egg and fried onions for garnish. Eating it after giving it a good mix was awesome. I liked it.

The Roti Jala with Chicken Curry consist 5 pieces of mini roti jala with a side of curry that also included 3,4 pieces of chicken with carrots. You can literally fit one whole piece of roti jala in your mouth which meant that it was consumed rather quickly. For some weird reason, I liked eating it by itself, lol. So there was no dipping it into the curry for me. Nope. Foe me, it was right from the plate and into my mouth. The Chicken Curry was the same one used for the Mee Kari, if I am not mistaken. I enjoyed having that by itself with the chicken and the satay too.

The Chicken Satay was pretty good. Each stick cost RM 1.50 and we decided on 10 sticks, to be shared between the two of us. Took a while to arrive at our table though because they ran out of it halfway through. It took a wait of 25 minutes to finally receive our dish as they had to wait for new stock to arrive and then cook it. When it was finally served though, they did apologize for the delay. The satay itself was nice. It had a sweetened outer layer with chewey meat that was perfect to dip into the accompanied peanut sauce and eaten. The size of meat on each sticks differ. Usually, when I order satay, in most cases, the size of meat on each stick resembles one another. Here, some had good size on them while the others had small, thin pieces. There were 2 sticks whereby the fats in the middle were bigger in size than the actual meat. As someone who usually skips eating the fats and only focus on the meat, that was a downer but other than that, it was all good.

Would I head back here? Yes, sure. If I find myself in this side of town, I would not mind dropping by for another visit. I am looking forward to giving their Nasi Dagang a try.

Fried Rice good satay in Petaling street Good street food in KL Jalan Sultan Large portions Mee Goreng Mee Hoon goreng Nasi Goreng Kampung Noodles Open Daily Petaling street Pork Free Satay stall by roadside

Ray Power Corner at Jalan Sultan, Petaling Street, KL – Satay, Fried Rice & Mee Goreng 😍 (pork free)

Since I was not going anywhere for the CNY holiday, I figured I’d go where the tourist go and immerse myself in the whole jovial, boisterous environment. Furthermore, pretty much most of my food visits here happened during the day and if there is one thing about Petaling Street, it is its ability to transform into a jovial, loud, boisterous environment at night compared to a mellowed down, serious version in the noon. So yea, I was looking forward to it.

I’ve seen Ray Power Corner several times when I do my drive-bys and in the evenings especially, they seem to be doing really well. My visit there would be a perfect time to drop by for a taste. They’ve apparently been around for 30 years and pretty much everything I’ve heard of them are positive. Word on the street is that they serve good, mouthwatering ‘Goreng’ food here …. fried rice, fried noodles and etc.

*** For easy reference, Ray Power Corner is a stall by the roadside, located within walking distance from REXKL and directly opposite Bee Cheng Hiang. Method of payment: they accept cash and QR Pay here.

Menu

Chicken Satay, RM 10 + Nasi Goreng Kampung, RM 10 + Mee Hoon Mee Goreng, RM 10

Chicken Satay
Nasi Goreng Kampung
Mee Hoon + Mee Goreng

Food was delicious. The Chicken Satay cost RM 2 per pieces and it comes in a set of 5 and 10. We opted for the set of 5, just to have a taste and it was yummy. The outer layer was sweet with a touch of crispyness here and there while the chicken meat was tender and juicy. As I am not a fan of the fats they include, I was happy that it was not included in the satay sold here. No fats, all meat.

As for the ‘Goreng’ items, it sure was goood. I especially loved the Mee Hoon Mee Goreng. If you like Mamak style fried noodles, the ones here would certainly satisfy you. For both the fried rice and the noodles, the meat option available is chicken and seafood. They are also vegetarian friendly, based on request. Honestly, with or without the meat, I would still eat it because it tasted good as it was. The Kampung Fried Rice was a combination of anchovies, egg, vegetables, chicken, flavorful rice. With the large portion size, one is guaranteed to leave with a full belly.

I had a positive experience here. Would I head back to Ray Power Corner? Yes, I certainly would as I am looking forward to giving the other dishes a try soon.

Chicken Satay Day Trip Drive out of town Famous Halal Open Daily Satay XL sized satays

Satay Hut @ Tanjong Karang, Selangor – Satay, satay, satay…. (Halal)

My friends and I decided to take a break from work and head out of town for lunch. By mutual agreement, we all decided on having satay. After skimming through the internet for good options, we came across Satay Hut. It had an average rating of 4.2/5 from over 1770 folks …. must be good, ey? This eatery was perfect for us as it serves satay and is out of town.

Once we fueled up, off we went. From KL, it took us about 1 hour and 50 minutes to reach the restaurant. We decided on driving using the ‘back way/road’ as oppose to tol road. The difference was only 30 minutes and we looked forward to driving pass ol’ school towns that we’d probably miss if we used the highway.

So, if you guys feel like taking a drive out of town, for a couple of hours – this would be good. You could also make it into a day trip or an overnight stay. Sekinchan is just 45 minutes away. Plenty to do to keep everyone happy and occupied.

One negative thing repeatedly mentioned in the comments/reviews was the long waiting time once it got crowded. So, we timed our journey to arrive there 15 minutes after it opens for the day. It was perfect as the crowd was just starting to pick up. Orders were taken as soon as we were ready and food arrived within 10 minutes.

Menu

Satay Big (10 sticks), RM 22 + Satay Medium (5 sticks), RM 5.50

While they also serve noodles and rice, we came here to give their satay a go and so, that was what we went for. If you looked through their menu, you’d notice that the satays here come in 2 sizes.

The image above displays the difference between a medium and a big satay. To me, the Medium is similar to the usual size you’d find at any satay shops and the Big is that very satay in XL version. It certainly was bigger than usual, more filling too. Between the two, I prefered the Medium. Why? It felt like the Medium had an equal amount of meat to flavor ratio. Usually the outer layer of the satay is sweet and flavorful, right? So, when u bite into it, you’d get a good amount of flavorful meat mix. With Big though, you’d get alot of meat but the sweet, flavorful outer layer is similar to the Medium in amount. It wasn’t in equal proportion. Some of my friends shared my opinion while the others were totally cool with more meat. Tastewise, as mentioned earlier, I liked the Medium. It was tasty and flavorful, the meat was juicy and tender.

I am sure by now we all have our own favorite spots for satay, a spot closer to home. However, if you feel like a drive, a short trip out of town, you guys can always head to Satay Hut. The satays were pretty good. We all had a good time.

Carrot Cake Cendol Curry Laksa Dessert Kampung Fried Rice Kopitiam Local Open Daily Satay

Nian Dai Kopidiam at Setapak – Perhaps one of the best kopitiams in this side of town? Impressed. 😍😍

So, one of our blog readers suggested we give this kopitiam a try. Thank you, for without your suggestion, we most probably would have been oblivious of its existence. Setapak is not an area my friends and I hang out at and so, unless it is regularly making the rounds on social media, I would not have known of this eatery. So, thank you 🙏🙏

The first thing I did prior to my visit was check out the Google rating on this eatery. If I am not mistaken, Nian Dai has only been open for a year now and to rake up an average score of 4.5 / 5 from over 500 reviewers is quite an achievement. Besides blog postings, we check Google ratings regularly because it provides insights. It is something we do before visiting any restaurant. So, we quickly noticed that this kopitiam managed to gain an insane number of reviewers within the short time they have been operating. There are well loved cafes and restaurants that has been around for years and still not have this many reviewers and a high average score. That was telling. It definitely got me all excited to give Nian Dai a try because who can resist a good kopitiam, right? Certainly not me, lol.

Nian Dai is located within a row of shops, in a new retail block. We have been to this area once prior, to visit Kelate Kitchen – Kelate Kitchen @ Setapak – Good, affordable Kelantanese food (Halal) . This restaurant is located opposite the road from this kopitiam. In case you guys are interested in some Nasi Dagang, can give it a go at Kelate Kitchen.

Parking: As mentioned above, the kopitiam is located in a new retail space. There is a bubble tea shop, a sushi restaurant and several other F&B outlets. It is a block by itself and surrounding this block, there are parking spots available, for free. There isn’t many though, so you most probably have to end up doing several rounds around the block before you come across a vacant spot. Many folks park by the roadside but be warned though, you might “kena saman.”

Nian Dai is new, modern kopitiam with a touch of old schoolness. I liked it. It obviously is a well loved eatery. We spent quite some time there and noticed that people kept coming and going, on constant rotation. Definitely not short in customers.

Menu

** if the Menu image above is unclear, Nian Dai’s FB page also displays the Menu.

Carrot Cake, RM 7.90 + Laksa, RM 12.90 + Kampung Fried Rice, RM 9.90 + Cendol, RM 5.90

Guys, food was real good. Usually when you order several dishes, one dish may be very nice and yummy while the others may just be okay, right? That is not the case here. All the dishes were very tasty.

The Carrot Cake was da bomb. It tasted like char kuey teow, flavor-wise, which I loved. A generous portion size, with plenty of taugeh and egg. Most importantly, it was not soaked in oil. Yay!

The Curry Laksa was delicious too, comes in a generous portion size. There were lots of noodles + siew yok + pork balls + fuchuk + taugeh + tauhu + long beans + brinjal. The curry broth is somewhat thick, is flavorful. Overall, an awesome dish.

The Kampung Fried Rice was very good. I especially loved the charred/slightly burned aftertaste that I’d get after each mouthfull. So good! The dish came with plenty of anchovies, seafood and again, a generous portion of rice. It was very tasty. The two sticks of satay that came on the side with sweet satay sauce poured all over only made the whole dish even better. Overall, a “sedap” simple dish. Burp!!

By the time we were done with the three dishes above, we were full but we were not ready to say goodbye yet, lol…. not before having dessert. We ordered the Cendol and I guess it is no surprise that even the dessert was da bomb. There was a good shaved ice to ingredients ratio. So, even if the ice melts, the overall flavor/taste isn’t diluted. First mouth in, you’d immediately be able to taste the gula melaka and as you dig in, you’d find plenty of red beans. It has been a while since I’ve last had cendol and I am glad to have had it here. Loved it.

I had a good time here. It is definitely worth a return. I am looking forward to it.

Famous Hokkien Mee Hokkien Mee Open Daily open late Open till 1 am Popiah Satay

Lao Ping Hokkien Mee @ Seapark – Okaylah

We literally spent half the day in Seapark today. Why? We were invited over to a friends’ place to indulge in some hearty, home cooked Thanksgiving lunch. We ate and ate to our hearts content. Burp! After we had a feast, we spent the next 4 hours catching up as the last we’ve seen each other was back in 2010… so, lots of catching up to do. By the time we finally left, it was around 8 pm. Believe it or not, despite eating ‘like a pig’, come dinner time – our stomachs started rumbling again. Yet again, we collectively decided to ‘hantam’ away. We’ll sweat and work it out tomorrow.

We wanted an eatery that could provide us with options – noodles, rice, popiah and etc. The perfect spot would be Restoran Seapark, a lil bit of everything under one roof. Also, I remember reading several reviews online about a stall in here called Lao Ping, famed for serving up some really good Hokkien Mee. Some folks even go as far as saying that you’d get the best in KL here. Really? I guess it is finally time to find out for ourselves, ey?

PSX_20191130_102248PSX_20191130_100631PSX_20191130_100110PSX_20191130_100752PSX_20191130_100918PSX_20191130_101116PSX_20191130_101338PSX_20191130_101504PSX_20191130_101625PSX_20191130_102013

I’ve been to this restaurant several times over the years but I never did manage to give the famous Hokkien Mee here a try. I’ve attempted to but there was always a waiting line and by the time I placed my order, I was told that I needed to wait at least 30 minutes. This time was no different, I was told that I had to wait 30 minutes and 30 minutes this time was no problem at all since I had time on my hands.

While waiting though, we decided to have some popiah and satay. We tried being good and just patiently wait for the noodles but it was hard, especially with the satays just floating by our table, on the way to their respected destinations/tables. The temptation was too much to resist.

Satay, 9 ringgit + Popiah, 5 ringgit

PSX_20191130_095710PSX_20191130_095853PSX_20191130_095433PSX_20191130_095548

The satay goes at 90 cents a stick, we ordered 10. They were yummy, not bad at all. The fatty bit in the middle were a lil too much for me because the lady includes quite a big piece but its no biggie as it is something I can remove with ease. The chicken satay were tender and juicy, coated with a nice sweet-ish taste to it.

The Popiah goes for 2.50 ringgit a row. We ordered 2 rows which cost us 5 ringgit. The dish was pretty simple, something you can munch on if you fancy something light or in between waiting for your other dishes to arrive.

Hokkien Mee, 8 ringgit

PSX_20191130_101834PSX_20191130_102118

Given the 30 minutes wait and the many positive reviews online, some even saying that this is one of the best Hokkien Mee in KL – I am kindda let down, perhaps I had too high an expectation? Sure, the noodles were soft and springy, flavor/tastewise – it was good but that unique taste that you’d associate with charcoal was missing and the pork lard bits were missing too. There were none and I was surprised. Reviews online indicated that these two things would be present but in this case, it was missing. I had to wait 30 minutes for this?? whattttt?? The dish as a whole, despite the absence of the 2 things indicated above, was not bad. I liked the fact that the noodles were nice and soft, there were plenty of prawns and the chilli paste was awesome. So yea, there are positive points but is it the best Hokkien Mee in town?? Ummm, nope, not based on the noodles I’ve tasted. It is okay, decent.
