Asian & Western Chicken Chop Hidden Hidden Cafe Muslim operated Nasi Balado Chicken Salted Egg Butter Chicken Chop Seksyen 16 PJ food

Grafa at Seksyen 16, PJ – A hidden cafe serving Asian and Western favorites (Muslim operated)

I would categorize Grafa as a hidden café. Nestled amidst a row of shops along the busy Jalan Universiti, this establishment presents an unassuming ambiance due to its strategic placement. While the shops in the front row gets plenty of ‘eyeballs’ as it faces the bustling main road, the back row does not share the same visual. Only people who drives around the block will notice Grafa’s existence. Despite that, it seemed like a popular lunch spot among the folks in the area as it was rather busy during that period.

It’s advantage is that it provides a relatively quiet atmosphere, rendering it an ideal location to relax and savor one’s meal. Over the years, I have frequently driven past this cafe in search of a parking spot. During my most recent attempt, I decided to give Grafa a try. Marketed as an Asian Fusion restaurant, it offers a range of Asian dishes, including Nasi Goreng, Nasi Balado, Indomie, and Mee Hoon Goreng Tom Yum, alongside Western offerings such as burgers, sandwiches, chicken chop, and pasta.

Menu

Nasi Balado Chicken, RM 17 + Salted Egg Butter Chicken Chop, RM 27

I was a bit unsure about what to order, but I eventually chose their Chicken Chop, and what a delightful decision it turned out to be. Grafa offers two fantastic chicken chop options, with the Grafa Chicken Chop being their signature item. However, I was excited to hear that the Salted Egg Butter Chicken Chop is a crowd favorite. I went for that option, and I’m so glad I did—it was absolutely delicious! I’ve always loved Salted Egg gravy for its distinct sweet and savory flavor, paired with a wonderfully thick texture. The dish featured a succulent piece of fried chicken thigh generously coated in salted egg gravy, accompanied by a side of crispy fries. The meat was tender and easy to bite into, making each mouthful a joy, especially with that generous drizzle of sauce on top. Yum.

The Nasi Belado Chicken is an Indonesian dish characterized by boneless chicken meat that is enveloped in a spicy chili paste. Here, the dish is accompanied by a serving of rice, topped with a fried egg, alongside chicken Balado and a serving of sweet sweet black sauce. I liked the spiciness of the chicken; the inclusion of red chili paste certainly imparted a desired ‘kick’ to the overall mix. However, for those who may find the spiciness overwhelming, mixing in the thickened sweet black sauce can lower the heat. In summary, this dish was tasty. If I were to change one thing, it would be to extend the cooking time of the meat slightly to make it more tender and reduce its chewiness.

Bakery cafe ex warehouse/ factory Halal Hidden Hidden Cafe Open Daily Seksyen 51A PJ cafe Smoothie Tedboy cafe in Petaling Jaya

Tedboy at Seksyen 51A, Petaling Jaya – An unexpected find

Why focus on Tedboy among the multitude of options available? The reason lies in the distinctive aesthetic qualities of this outlet. While it features the typical brown wooden interior, this outlet had a more relaxed and chill vibe, a good spot to sit and unwind if you are in the area. The norm with Tedboy is that it is usually attached to an office block and/or a row of shops. Here however, it is a standalone, with free parking available within the vicinity.

The location of this establishment is particularly noteworthy. For fans of ‘hidden’ gems, this outlet may indeed capture your attention. If you are familiar with the surroundings, you would recognize that the area comprises warehouses, small to medium enterprises, and offices, among others. Nestled within this environment, quite inconspicuously, stands the Tedboy outlet. I came across this cafe unplanned, while awaiting the end of the peak hour traffic.

** Easy parking, free of charge. Located just outside the cafe.

Menu

Menu is similar to other outlets. Sandwiches, pasta, light bites, desserts and drinks are available. Can check out their Menu via this link : https://www.tedboy.com/outlet-51a

Berry Milky Way, RM 16

As I had dinner plans in a hour and did not want to fill my stomach up, I opted to try one of their smoothies instead. The Berry Milky Way is essentially a combination of yogurt and berries. While a little too sweet for my liking, it nevertheless was a nice drink to have on a warm, hot day.

Overall, I like this particular outlet of Tedboy and I’ll likely revisit when I am in the area next.

Bagel Bagel sandwich Foccacia Hidden Cafe Hidden cafe in Sungai Besi Industrial Theme Kam Heong Chicken Sandwich New cafe KL 2025 June Pesto Foccacia Sungai Besi

Scrappy Dough at Sungai Besi, KL – KL’s new bagel spot (Pork free)

There is a new spot in town that offers freshly baked bagels and bread. I would consider it ‘hidden’ due to its somewhat obscure location. This one week-old eatery has taken residence in an older building with an industrial theme. Visitors can anticipate a spacious setup featuring aesthetically pleasing nooks and corners that is insta-worthy.

As I am not familiar with this particular part of Sungai Besi, I relied on Waze for navigation. Upon reaching the designated location, do look out for two orange cones that signify the entrance to Scrappy Dough. There are no prominent signboards indicating its presence, aside from the orange cones and the bagels displayed at their window area. Upon arriving at the entrance, proceed up the stairs, where you will soon arrive at Scrappy Dough. For those driving, parking spots are conveniently located just outside the entrance.

Lookout for the two orange cones to easily identify the entrance
Replica of bagels displayed by the window is another way to identify Scrappy Dough.

The focaccia was freshly baked and is among my favorite types of bread. I like its soft and dense interior. Displayed enticingly at the counter, the aroma of pesto was irresistible. The experience of biting into it was delightful, as it was both soft and pillowy, with a distinct taste of pesto in every bite. Yum!

The Kam Heong Chicken Bagel Sandwich is their bestseller. The bagel itself exhibited a soft and pillowy texture, providing a pleasing experience with each bite. The filling was composed of kam heong sambal/ paste, accompanied by chicken. Its distinct flavor was apparent from the very first taste. While it was indeed flavorful, I would appreciate more quantity of meat, as I only had three small pieces. Fortunately, the generous amount of sambal was sufficient to enjoy independently.

Taman Hati Studio & Cafe at SS 2, PJ – A hidden gem indeed (Muslim operated)

Situated amidst a row of shops on the quieter side of SS 2, Taman Hati Studio & Cafe is conveniently located a few doors away from well-known cafes such as Butter & Spice, Kona Bakehouse, and Ono Specialty Coffee. Occupying the first floor, its presence hidden and may not be immediately apparent without the signage displayed at the entrance.

What captured my attention from the get go were the greens. Upon opening the entrance door and entering the café, one is greeted by a visual display of lush greenery. I found this to be quite delightful.

I have a profound appreciation for greenery, particularly in cafes that provide an atmosphere rich with plants. The presence of such elements has a remarkable ability to soothe the spirit and alleviate stress. I love it. For those who share this sentiment, this cafe is a must visit. The establishment is filled with lush vegetation at every corner.

I am a fan of the setting and ambiance at Taman Hati. The cafe certainly is a neighborhood favorite. I dropped by around tea time and the space was full, bustling with people and conversations.

The Carrot Cake here was drier than what I typically prefer. As a matter of personal preference, I tend to favor denser, moister cakes. Nevertheless, having been informed that this particular cake is a favorite among customers, I decided to sample it. While the base was indeed somewhat dry, the incorporation of cream cheese imparted the desired denseness. Coupled with the addition of crunchy walnuts and cranberries, this cake ultimately proved to be quite enjoyable.

They provide a selection of flavored Kombucha, and I chose the Australian Lavender variety. It was not only refreshing but also reminiscent of one of my favorite childhood drinks—Ribena. Each sip was a pleasurable experience.

All in all, I had an enjoyable experience at Taman Hati Studio & Cafe. I’ll definitely revisit soon.

VIOBA Cafe at Bukit Bintang, KL – Decent food with splendid Merdeka 118 view (Muslim friendly)

VIOBA stands for the Victoria Institution (VI) Old Boys Association and functions as the school’s clubhouse and café, which is accessible to the public. In terms of location, the café is situated next to the Al Bukhary Mosque, across the road from the Jalan Hang Tuah Fire and Rescue Station (Bomba), and near BBCC Lalaport and the Hang Tuah train station. I have driven past this main road numerous times, intending to proceed to KL City Centre/Bukit Bintang, yet I was only recently discovered VIOBA CAFÉ. One aspect that immediately captured my attention was the splendid view of Merdeka 118 in the background.

Parking: was easy and free of charge, with plenty of spaces available within the café premises. Both outdoor and indoor seating options available here. At the entrance, there were tables and chairs designated for those who preferred outdoor seating. Given the high temperatures during our visit, we chose to sit indoors. This air-conditioned environment significantly contributed to our comfort. The indoor area transitions to another outdoor seating at the back, which presents a more serene setting, surrounded by greenery, and provides a picturesque view of Merdeka 118, in contrast to the more bustling front outdoor section.

The drinks we selected were good; however, the food, on the other hand, was decent, satisfactory and did not leave a lasting impression. The fried rice had the distinct taste that accompanies a Kampung Fried Rice but sadly, underflavored besides the use of salt. The Golden Fish & Chips consisted of two pieces of mini fish fillet, fried and coleslaw. It filled up my stomach but I’ll likely give the dish a miss next time.

Would I return to this cafe? Although the dishes we ordered did not particularly impress, I liked the ambiance and the café setting. This is sufficient to entice me for another visit. A nighttime visit may prove to be more suitable for my next experience.

Brownie Chicken Chop Dessert Hidden Cafe Kota Damansara Nasi Lemak with Chicken Rendang Open Daily Pork Free

Signature Cafe at Kota Damansara – A hidden gem (Pork free)

I am a foodie who enjoys discovering hidden gems whenever time permits and so, when I was told about Signature Cafe, I was excited to give it a go. What makes this particular cafe hidden is the fact that it is located inside a large home improvement/ interior design store – Signature Flagship Store.

Plenty of parking available within the vicinity of the store, free of charge. Once you’ve parked, walk through the entrance of the store and you’d find the cafe easily on your right. If you visit during lunch hour, you’d find quite the crowd which consist mostly of working folks as well as families.

This cafe has a lounge feel to it and it makes a perfect space for work meets. You’d be able to find a quiet corner here and there to have your discussions while munching on your lunch. At the same time, it was equally as good a spot for my friend and I to catch up. We had a corner all to ourselves and we spent a good 2 hours here.

Menu

Dark Chocolate Brownie, RM12

We started off with some dessert, a little something to munch on while waiting for our food to arrive. The brownie had a crispy, crunchy thin layer on top and a soft, dense bottom. What I liked about this dessert besides its texture was that it was chocolatty and not too sweet.

Signature Nasi Lemak with Chicken Rendang, RM 22

Instead of a normal flat plate, the Nasi Lemak here was served in a rattan one with an elevated angle. Rather unique. As you can see, the dish included chicken rendang (thigh piece) + sambal, long beans, cucumber, peanuts, anchovies, rice and papadam. It delicious and filling, one best enjoyed on an empty stomach, I suppose. The chicken was juicy and flavorful, tender too. The sambal was neither too spicy or too sweet, it simply was a good combination of both. Overall, this dish was yummy.

Signature Chicken Chop, RM 24

I am a fan of chicken chop but is of the mindset that the one served fried is the best. The one here though was grilled/pan seared? So naturally, the chicken texture was different and I thought I was not going to like it but decided to give it a try anyway because it was a crowd favorite. I was apprehensive. However, upon eating it, I realized it wasn’t bad at all. The meat was soft and tender, tasted good. It was served together with a portion of buttery mash potato and sauteed vegetables.

Overall, it was a good trip here to Signature Cafe. Would I head back here? Once in a blue moon, perhaps. I rarely venture into Kota Damansara and when I do, it is usually for work related matters. This cafe provides a good setting for some work related meetings. I’ll be sure to keep it in mind.

Aesthetically pleasing Ampang cafe Cafe in a plant nursery Cake Coffee Dessert Green theme cafe KL Greens Hidden Cafe Long black Nature No wifi Open Daily Plant nursery & cafe Pork Free Salted Caramel Cake

Sipping Corner at Ampang – Greens and cakes 😍 (pork free) (Permanently Closed)

Whenever I need some recharging and have time to spare, I usually head to this eatery. In case you do not already know, Sipping Corner is a cafe hidden inside a plant nursery. So, it is a no brainer that one can expect to be surrounded by greens here. I’ve had the most stressful week in a long time and since a day trip out of town is not possible at the moment, this is the best I can do to make myself feel better. Just me and my lonesome self, surrounded by an aesthetically pleasing environment, sipping on a cuppa coffe and biting into a slice of decadent cake. Dessert and greens, a good combination indeed.

Sipping Corner has 2 outlets – Puchong and Ampang. I’ve only ever been to the Puchong branch prior to this, the older one. The one in Ampang is newer, opened doors last year. It took me a good 30 minutes drive to get here from Brickfields. I intentionally opted for the tol free road since its the weekend. No traffic jam.

Parking : There are parking spots right infront Sipping Corner. As I visited on a weekend, most of the other shops were closed, empty spots were plenty and free.

Sipping Corner occupies a corner lot and has 2 floors. The ground floor is their nursery – Plant & Pot Studio, the top floor is the cafe – Sipping Corner.

*** There is NO WIFI here.

Long Black, RM 9 + Mix Salted Caramel Cake, RM 14

I decided to try their best seller – the Mix Salted Caramel cake. It comes with several layers. On the top is a sprinkle of biscuit crumble and a spread of salted caramel, followed by a layer of dense chocolate cake and then another spread of salted caramel. The bottom layer is made up an airy, fluffy cake. On the side, there is a layer of thickened chocolate ganache. It tasted good, not too sweet. If you are a fan of salted caramel, then this is the cake for you because it takes centerstage here. As it comes in multiple layers with several textures, it will fill you up quickly.

I liked the Long Black here. It was strong and potent. Certainly provided me with that bitter ‘kick’ I looked forward to.

*** As this cafe is located 10 minutes away from the popular Lookout Point, you can extend your trip to this side of town. Perhaps have dinner at the famous Thai Restaurant – Veg Fish Farm Thai Restaurant,( Veg Fish Farm Thai Restaurant @ Hulu Langat, Ampang – A delightful experience. Yum 🙂) and then spend the evening/night enjoying the panaromic view of Kuala Lumpur from the Lookout Point.

Cheras Hidden Cafe Loaf Matcha Sesame loaf Sandwich Tuna sandwich

Aki’s Kohi at Cheras – a cosy, hidden cafe

I decided to spend the day alone yesterday, some ME time with myself. Considering it was a public holiday, I stayed away from the usual, popular cafes around town and instead opted for an eatery that is somewhat under the radar.

The cafe is located on the Ground floor of D’alamanda. Waze will lead you there. As you drive around the block, you’d be able to see it. When I first arrived, I thought this was my first time on this particular side of Cheras but as I later realized, I have been here before … to ‘hantam’ char siew. The popular char siew restaurant, Char Siew Yoong is located within walking distance, less than 5 minutes away. I initially thought of changing plans and heading here instead but it was full house with a long waiting line. So, nope, Aki’s Kohi it was.

Parking was easy. You can either park in the basement carpark available at a rate of RM 2 for 3 hours or outside, along the road. People seem to park everywhere here, lol. So, it is up to u.

The cafe is small and cosy. Not too big a space to accomodate a large crowd but smaller crowd and individuals, sure. Both indoor and out door seatings are available. I liked the hidden element to it. Even as you drive past it, despite being located on the Ground floor

Menu

Matcha Sesame Loaf, RM 11 + Tuna Sandwich, RM 16

I started off with the loaf. I was intrigued with the combination, was curious to see how it turned out. Both matcha and sesame have strong flavors that tend to overpower but surprisingly, it worked well here. I liked the fact that before serving, they heated it up. It certainly was best eaten warm. The loaf itself was dense, not too sweet, with hints of matcha and sesame.

The sandwich was refreshingly simple. It was made up of toasted bread, lettuce, tomato and tuna. It tasted good and was a filling dish especially when had with the loaf.

Address: Lot 2-00-07, Ground floor, D’alamanda Pudi Impian IV, Jalan Pudu Impian, Cheras, KL.

Affordable Asam Laksa Chicken Chop Good Food Hidden Cafe Pork Free Toast with Kaya

Makan Time @ Kota Damansara – Yummmm (Pork free)

Last week, a couple of us decided to take a short trip out of town for a couple of days. Before getting onto the North – South Expressway, we had our lunch at Makan Time in Kota Damansara. It was certainly an area I’ve never been to prior to this. Almost all my visits to Kota Damansara are limited to Sunway Giza Mall as well as the restaurants in the surrounding area. I’ve never ventured beyond that.

The restaurant is located in Taman Perindustrian Sungai Buloh. As its name suggest, do expect SMEs, factories, repair shops and etc. here. If you are looking for a HIDDEN CAFE, I think Makan Time may be it. It is rather unassuming. It does not stand out, it is located in the inner ring of this industrial area .. an area I most probably will drive past but not enter. Most of the shop lots in the area were closed and then, there tucked in a quiet corner is Makan Time.

During the time of our visit, Makan Time was full on the inside, so we ended up sitting outside. With the rain and a fan running right above us, the heat was not a worry at all. Despite being full, we were attended to rather quickly. Our waiter was attentive and helpful, gave us good suggestions based on our likes and dislikes.

Menu

Asam Laksa, RM 11

Laksa noodles with broth + condiments

The Asam Laksa came in 2 separate bowls. One bowl contained a milky broth with Laksa noodles and the other consisted of the usual Laksa condiments – mint leaves, shredded cucumber, shredded fish and fried bean curd (fuchuk). It is not the usual Asam Laksa I’ve taste most of my life. Before adding in the condiments, the noodles with milky broth tasted more like a Kelantanese Laksa with almost a zero taste of the distinct asam laksa flavor. After adding in the condiments, the flavors slowly started becoming evident. This is what I’d call a “dainty” Asam Laksa because it is not “kaw kaw”. The ‘asam’ part was dialed down. You’d be able to taste it but it was rather mild. It was nevertheless delicious and a lot of ingredients in one bowl.

Hainanese Chicken Chop, RM 18

Hainanese Chicken Chop

Ho my gawddddd, this was one delicious chicken chop. For realssss. My friend has been craving for this particular dish and was excited to give it a try here. Upon asking, we were told that the Hainanese Chicken Chop was a crowd favorite and we decided to give it a try. You get a juicy piece of boneless chicken with a crispy, seasoned top coat. Yummy! On top of the chicken chop, you’d get a good portion of corns, carrots and peas. Below it all, there was a serving of potato wedges, a bullseye egg, some cherry tomatoes with some slightly sweet-ish, tasty gravy. Man, it was delicious. I have not had a good piece of chicken chop in a looooooooong time. Loved it.

Roti Kahwin Kaya Butter, RM 4.50

I love toast with Kaya and butter but this was not my cup of tea. The kaya used here was no ordinary kaya – it was DUCK EGG kaya. Soooooo not my cup of tea. The infusion of duck egg into the equation was overpowering and it lingered and lingered for a loooong time. One mouth was all I could ingest. It certainly is not everyones’ cup of tea.

Overall, I had a great time at Makan Time. Both the dishes I tried was yummy (minus the toast bread 😁). Customer service was great despite it being full house. Best of all, the good food here are all affordably priced. I’d be back here soon. Looking forward to trying their Nasi Kerabu.

Cordon Bleu Courtyard Hidden Cafe Italian Risotto Seafood Risotto

Terrasse Cafe & Bistro @ Section 17, PJ – A hidden cafe ?? 🤔🤔

Whether Terrasse is a hidden cafe is based on your own interpretation. Some bloggers refers to it as a hidden gem whereas other reviewers simply see it as an eatery that is located on the first floor of a row of shops. What is your take?

As for me, I’ve been to this specific part of Section 17 regularly over the past few years and I’ve never noticed Terasse despite it having been around for a little under two years. Know which part of Section 17 I am referring to?? Within the small square that is home to Tujoh Cafe, S OneOne and Wild Sheep Home. In my defense, there are several row of shops here and Terrasse is located on the side that is least popular?? Most people, including myself usually skip this particular row unless we are on the lookout for parking. However, with the popular ais kacang/cendol shop Kwong Wah setting up shop here a few doors away, I foresee a change in the pattern 🤔🤔.

Anyways, as mentioned above, Terrasse is located on the FIRST floor. So, lookout for this brown door and then head up the stairs.

I arrived a little after lunch hour, hoping the crowd – if any, would have died down by then .. it did not. It wasn’t full house but it was 3/4 full. It was obvious that the cafe was well liked. I liked how it looked, it resembled a courtyard? As you can see from the image above, there is an open concept in the middle, designed in such a way that allowed sunlight to get through. It certainly lit up the place. Usually the common worry would be that sitting underneath it would heat you up but no worry needed here as they thought about that by having some sort of water cooling system? There was a constant flow of water on the see-through roof that cooled down the temperature. Besides a little heat as a result of sitting under the sunlight, I did not break into a sweat despite wearing a long sleeve turtleneck.

Menu

Seafood Risotto, RM 40 + Cordon Bleu, RM 38

Seafood Risotto
Cordon Bleu

Both dishes ordered were recommended, crowd favorites. The Cordon Bleu was well plated, I liked how it was presented. Tasted good too. The dish consisted of 5 pieces of chicken that was wrapped in cheese. Then, once breaded the ones here are pan fried and then tossed in the oven. I dig the texture, crispy on the outside, chewy and dense on the inside, flavorful too. The chicken was served on a bed of salad, some mushroom, tomatoes, salsa, greens. A tasty dish indeed.

The Seafood Risotto was pretty good too but how good is dependent on how you like your rice. The risotto we received, the soggyness of the whole dish reflected the rice too, in the sense that if cooked longer – it might just turn into sticky porridge. I was cool with that, enjoyed the dish. My partner though did not enjoy it as much as I did because he preferred his risotto’s rice to be more solid, chewy. Technically, I do agree, the rice was a tad overcooked but I had no issues with it, he did. So, I suppose when it comes to dishes like risotto, it also boils down to individual preferences. Anyways, the dish came with 2 large prawns and 2 mussels, squids too. The risotto was creamy and dense, definitely an indulgent meal for sure, filling.
