Food City at Bangsar South – A whole floor dedicated to food 😍

I have recently discovered that Bangsar South has another culinary paradise, apart from the commonly known dining spots at Nexus or The Sphere.

Within SouthLink, a lifestyle residential apartment, there is an entire floor exclusively dedicated for food. Occupying this floor is Food City, a large and contemporary food court, a bakery, cafes, some individual restaurants and a mini mart.

Parking: Plenty of parking in their basement carpark at an hourly rate of RM 2.

During regular weekdays, it appeared that the floor in question was widely known among the local residents and the work folks in the area. However, it seemed that myself, along with many others in Kuala Lumpur, remained unaware of its existence. At lunchtime, on weekdays, one should expect a bustling crowd filling the floor. It became evident that a substantial number of individuals from the area had chosen this location for their midday meals. Comparatively, weekend visits to the floor offered a more laid-back and leisurely experience.

Food City – the food court

One can find a variety of food options here including Thai, Vietnamese and local cuisine. Here’s a look at what we ate here.

The Wan Tan Mee proved to be quite tasty, much to my surprise. Considering my typically modest expectations for food court fare, this dish exceeded them by offering a rather enjoyable experience. The noodles possessed a pleasing springiness, while the char siew exhibited a slightly caramelized crust and tender, succulent meat. Additionally, the dish included a half-boiled egg, bak choy, and a side of soup.

This came from Hong Kee Chinese Stir Fry stall. We decided to give it a try because based on observation, the crowd seem to like the food this stall dishes out. I however ended up ordering the wrong dish because it tasted pretty bad. The Yong Chow Fried Rice, RM 12.90, was bland and tasteless. Whichever their popular dishes may be, this friend rice certainly is not one of them.

This dish was delicious. It is from the Taiwanese Bento stall, where patrons have the opportunity to customize their own set meal from a variety of options. Each set comprises a portion of rice or noodles, a serving of meat, and the choice of three vegetables.

My meal consisted of a serving of noodles with fish fillet (meat) and brinjal, accompanied by acar, and peas (3 vegetables). This combination was highly satisfying. The flat noodles had a texture akin to Pan Mee and the portion size was generous. They were simply prepared, with a drizzle of oil and sweet sauce. The fish fillet was particularly delightful, featuring tender fish enveloped in a well-seasoned, crispy batter. I relished both the fish fillet and the noodles. The vegetables were also delicious, with the acar offering crispy, pickled vegetables combined with nuts. The lightly fried brinjal retained its soft and gooey texture, while the peas and red chillies provided a taste reminiscent of kangkung belacan, which happens to be one of my favorite dishes.

The Curry Mee demonstrated the potential to be a delightful dish. The curry itself possessed a pleasant taste, accompanied by a subtle touch of sweetness. Unfortunately, it fell short in terms of consistency, being excessively diluted for my personal preference. This particular dish consisted of a combination of yellow mee and mee hoon, with added shredded chicken, fish balls, tauhu, and taugeh.

After concluding our time at the food court, we embarked on a stroll around the premises to explore additional dining establishments. Among the options available, we found BabSang, which offers Korean cuisine, Boon Signature Roast Pork, a bakery known as La Belle Patisserie, and Mixue, a well-liked Chinese dessert brand.

There were both positive and negative aspects in the dishes we sampled; however, on the whole, the experience was favorable. Personally, I would not object to returning for another visit in order to explore other dining establishments and menu items available here.
